U67 cable identification
« on: June 27, 2019, 01:40:05 AM »

In Klaus’s u67 reissue teardown two different types of original cable were mentioned. Belden 3344 cable, and Dörfler-made cable. Were these labelled in an obvious way (printing on jacket)? Or if not, is there an easy way to identify?

The Dörfler cable can be identified by its double corkscrew shield of raw copper strands, the Belden used a traditional braided tinned copper shield.

Externally, the Belden has a slivery shiny jacket, while the Dörfler has a matte dark gray jacket.
Neither is labeled.

Does the Belden cable have different gauge conductors for the heater and ground?  (Like GAC7) Or extra conductors for “doubling up”?  (I’ve seen some photos using twisted pairs of conductors.). How many conductors in the original Belden?

The Belden is a classic multi-conductor cable. It came in all kinds of conductor numbers. It uses a different color for each conductor, but all conductors have the same diameter. There is no additional shielding, separation, or sizing difference of any of the conductors.

I am looking for a u67 swivel mount with the Belden cable and haven’t had any luck, however I can buy Neumann m269 swivel mount, and also buy a separate male tuchel connector, but when I searched the Belden cable many different spools of wire came up in ebay but I am not sure which one to buy to put this cable together myself ?

I hope you realize that Tuchel connectors on the M269 cable have a different pin orientation/pinout than those for a U67 cable, and would not work on a U67 mic and its power supply?

Ahh I didn’t realize it was a different pin out, thank you for this Klaus.
Seems like the Neumann ic4 swivel is the same but I would need to put the 7 pin inside for the u67.
I was hoping to build a cable instead of waiting for one to become available online

When you say a different pin orientation does that mean the m269 can not be wired for a u67 ? I ask because I see seven holes in the female connector and the u67 has seven holes ?

The key position which mates/aligns male
and female connectors is offset by 30 degrees on the U67 compared to all other mics with broadcast connectors (M269, 249, 254 etc.) to avoid mis-plugging and destroying AC701 tube heaters by hitting them with the U67’s 6.3volts rather than 4.0
