Sony C800G capsule discoloration
« on: July 26, 2018, 12:26:25 PM »

my friend took me to a studio he’s been working at last night to check out their Sony C800G. It had a really weak bass response but no campfire noise or anything that made me think it was the tube so I checked out the capsule and noticed it had a strange discoloration on the top of both sides. I hadn’t seen this before so I thought it may have something to do with it. The studio was set up very improperly so we took out every single cable and redid the whole signal chain and honestly it sounded like it was working after all that but I am running off of no sleep so it’s hard to really trust my ears after the day I had. I will go back soon and check if it’s all good and if not I will get some recordings to post.  But even if it is working i’m wondering what would cause this patina on the capsule or if anyone has dealt with this.

Thanks for any info!

The discoloration does not look to me to be due to deterioration of the gold sputtering, but due to an uneven sputtering process during manufacture. I would therefore not attribute any sonic anomalies of the mic to it.

The proof of course would be capsule substitution. But from the pictures, the capsule looks super clean.
