Unknown Vintage Hybrid Ribbon/Condenser Tube Mic
« on: November 03, 2016, 11:25:11 AM »

Hi,

recently a nice pair of unknown vintage microphones came into my hands.
These were probably the first (sorry Mr Fouxman...) hybride ribbon/condenser mics ever made.
An omni condenser capsule is sitting underneath a ribbon motor. You can switch between omni, cardioid and fig-8.
They have a Raytheon 5703 tube inside and two trannies, BV51 and BV56. More pics of parts can be made.
Unfortunately i do not have a PSU...

Please have a look at the pictures. Does anyone have any idea about who was the manufacturer of these?
They only say 'JB 8CS'??

Thanks for your interest!

Maybe they are from Switzerland or France? Condensateurs Fribourg... 8CS could mean 8-Cardioide-Spherique ?

Fwiw, the labeling reminds me of how Sennheiser labeled/relabeled some mics (an example), and the bv-XX transformer nomenclature is typical of German microphones. However, German mics from that era tended to use German components as well (for example, Siemens capacitors). This is a novel microphone with pattern switching not unlike the Western Electric/Altec 639a/b, but substituting a condenser capsule for the dynamic diaphragm.

The connector seems to be the same 5-pin that was used in the CMV3 and CM7151, but fixed with a kind of bayonet instead of a threaded junction ... seems to be made in Germany.

Ok, i found out that it is Swiss made.  8)
Manufacturer was Jakob Bohli (JB) who made several studio microphones for the broadcasting corporations in Switzerland.

Infos (german) and pictures:

Still had no time to build a PSU....
