Neumann M49 Capsule - Authentic?
« on: March 18, 2016, 03:39:04 PM »

Hi Everyone-

I was doing a vocal session the other day with an old M49 and I noticed an unpleasant distortion on the top end with a female singer.  I took a look at the capsule and I'm not sure that its an actual Neumann capsule.

Can anyone ID it?  The non-recessed screws and all just don't look original to me.

I'm attaching a picture.

Thanks everyone!

Klaus can say for sure, but that does not look like a Neumann product to me.

It doesn't even require very close inspection to say that the terminations and lead-out wires, at a minimum, look quite wrong. The sputtering on the diaphragm also looks strange; I'd assume this to be an inexpensive import. Odd that the wire connecting to the center termination also appears to have been nicked by something at some point

Thanks for the response.

Yeah, it doesn't look to me to be original.  Doesn't sound it either.

Just kind of an ugly top end. Not an M49 sounding top end.

I'd be curious if anyone can confirm.

Thanks!

Confirmed: this is an aftermarket capsule unrelated to any Neumann product I know.

Thanks guys.

That confirms what I suspected.

So is the best option to buy a new K47 from Neumann?  I know we have another capsule, but it's missing quite a bit of gold on one side and even more on the other.  I'm attaching a picture of the nicer side.  Reskinning is not such an attractive option.

The new ones that I've used have been quite nice.

Thanks,

The picture tells me that the amount of loss of gold, and therefore increase in noise, may still be borderline acceptable. I would try it! If the capsule is noisy or lacks frequency balance, buy a new or used genuine Neumann K49/47.

But before you buy new, inquire with Neumann, which of the capsule options, K47fet, K47 or K49, are currently the cheapest; that has changed-unexplainably and illogically-through the decades, and, no matter what others may say, I have never found an audible performance difference between the supposed "super-matched" K49, the standard K47, and the single-side use K47fet. Neumann's manufacturing tolerances are that tight.

Thanks Klaus!

I'll test this capsule and see how it sounds.  I can't imagine that it's worse than the one I've been listening to.

The last time I had to buy a K47 capsule I believe I received one for use with a 47Fet, but it installed into a tube 47 quite easily.  This one shouldn't' be too hard.
