U67 Capsule Cleaning (again)...
« on: September 25, 2015, 07:36:13 AM »

After reading the stickie and all the relevant posts here, I have a rather straightforward question: is there anyone reputable in Europe who can clean/restore a U67/M269 capsule that suffers from shutting out when breathing into it? (And I definitely don't mean 'reskinning' the capsule. I have a reskinned KK67 and it isn't on par with originals - old nor new).
Does Neumann itself offer this service?
Thanks!

No such service from Neumann anymore. I let others chime in on good (emphasized!) capsule cleaning service in Europe.

Martin Gathard in the UK is a master at cleaning capsules.

He used to work at FWO Bauch when they were the Neumann distributor and later moved to Sennheiser UK when Neumann Berlin were purchased by Sennheisr.

He retired last year but, I understand, but still works on Neumann microphones from home.

I have his contact details if you drop me an e-mail: john(at)sound-link(dot)co(dot)UK.

Stewart Tavener at Xaudia has cleaned the capsules in my U87 and U77 with good results. I have always found him a pleasure to deal with.

Is the latter recommendation also U.K. based?

Despite the recurrent theme regarding the ineffectivenes, even danger, of cleaning capsules, is there a shift in this consensus towards cleaning now? If so, who in the US?  There surely must be 50,000 LDC capsules out there considering cumulative Neumann, AKG, and other production over the last 50 years. (Tho for Chinese caps, probably just cheaper to trash and replace)

Neumann in Connecticut did a good job cleaning Neumann capsules in the past, but that was when Tom Onofrio was still there.
I do not have recent examples of cleaning, and in general, find that Neumann/USA often will choose replacement when, properly done, the capsule is fully restorable to factory performance, if going the extra mile.

But that may not be a good business decision in cases where the company's wholesale price for a new capsule competes with the man-hours potentially spent restoring the old one by service personell which could work on something more profitable.

Tom is in business for himself, of course, and still doing good work with general Neumann repairs at least. I don't know if he offers capsule cleaning or not.
