Neumann K47 Capsule: Different Versions?
« on: April 16, 2015, 09:44:10 PM »

Is the K47 capsule exactly the same in all the mics that carry it - be it strictly cardioid or multi-pattern?
In other words, is the back diaphragm of the U47fet (being Hyper-cardioid) exactly the same as an M149 ...
Is the capsule interchangeable within the U47, M49, TLM49, etc. (not including mount, holder, etc.)?

For a while Neumann selected K47 for uniformity of capacitance, front and back, so that U48 and M49 would work well in their secondary patterns omni, and, especially critical, figure eight. They marketed that capsule specifically as "K49/K48".

But in my experience current production of these single-backplate capsules front-to-back capacitance tolerances have been narrowed so much, adn uniformity between front and rear is so good that any Neumann capsule labeled "K47", "K47fet" and "K49" pretty much performs the same (except for the price!).

Aside from the price, there is another significant technical difference between the K 47 fet and K 49 capsules! For the current single (cardioid) pattern microphone models M 147 Tube and U 47 fet in which the K 47 fet is used, only the front diaphragm of this capsule is connected. The rear diaphragm is present for proper acoustic impedance, but without electronic connection. In these capsules strict adherence to the technical specifications is verified only for the electronically active front half, whereas both halves of a K 49 are very closely matched to achieve near perfect multi-pattern performance. This does account for a roughly 40% difference in cost.

Correct, but the center thread in the backplate, and the diaphragm lead-out screw + washer are installed on K47fet. That means the usual hook-up to multi-pattern mics is available on these capsules, as long as you have the lead-out wire with its eyelet end.
