Sony C37a cabling question
« on: January 26, 2015, 03:47:54 PM »

Hi Guys,

 I have a question regarding re-cabling three Sony C37a microphones which are currently on my bench.

The original cable's insulation has perished but the connectors are still all useable.

I intend to use Gotham GAC-7 as i have had good results with this in the past, but one of the mics has been re-cabled fairly recently with GAC-4 quad microphone cable. I wondered whether anyone has an opinion on the suitability of GAC-4 and it's current carrying capability in this context. GAC-7 has a pair of thicker conductors for heater supply and heavier shielding.

Replacing all the cabling with GAC-7 would be more expensive for the client but I think I would feel more comfortable using it.

I have yet to examine the original Sony cable in any detail but if anyone has any advice on what a suitable replacement might be I would be most grateful!

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Jack, I'd go with the GAC 7, for three reasons:

1. It is sonically superior to the GAC 4

2. Not sure where you get the necessary fifth conductor from in a four conductor tube mic cable like the GAC 4, unless you use only the cable shield als ground

3. Cost difference between GAC 7 and GAC 4 is marginal, especially considering the overall value of the mic system. That's like mounting some Cheng Shins on your Porsche, instead of Michelins.

RE: terminating the GAC 7:
I would use the traditional European tube mic cable colors, first established when everyone was using Austrian Doerfler cables, of which the Gotham GAC 7 is a direct successor:

Audio (+) = white
Audio (-)  = brown
Heater  = Red (thick)
Ground = Blue (thick)
Yellow = B+

For complete RF protection, make sure to connect the cable's ground and shield on both connectors to their respective ground pins, and the housing lugs of the connectors!!!

Thanks Klaus

I'm glad you agree with my prognosis.

I have been taking very detailed photographs of the internals of the mics. Would they be of any interest to anyone on here?

Thanks again

I've never had a C37a open, and do not own one, so I would be interested to see the photos.

Should i just add them to this thread? Or is a dropbox, or similar link, better in general?

Please upload to this thread and keep the file size as low as possible!
Thanks for your generous help.
