U87 head problems
« on: January 19, 2015, 10:18:39 PM »

Hello.
A friend of mine came with his good sounding U87 with all kind of noises and problems. Sometimes it works, sometimes don't and the background noises made me think about capacitors; but now I suspect something is broken in the head mechanism, probably the pattern switch. We're in Argentina and there are few mic doctors here; is it something workeable to open that part to try to see what's wrong and if it is fixeable?. Sometimes I fly to europe with my mics and have them repaired there, but this mic is not mine...
thanks

Hello Guillermo,
Could you upload a sound sample of the noise you heard? That could be helpful to narrow the possible cause for the malfunction of your friend's U87.
In the meantime I do not recommend that you open the mic to experiment with component substitutions.

Thanks.
I'll ask my friend to record it.

For complete RF protection, make sure to connect the cable's ground and shield on both connectors to their respective ground pins, and the housing lugs of the connectors!!!
