Hi there. I run a studio just outside of Oxford in the UK. I have come across a 1959 Neumann U47 which is not working.
The mic has a newly built PSU+cable. I have the original VF14m tube and a brand new Telefunken VF14K (which should apparently work in an original 47 too). The rest of the mic appears to all be original.
I'm not experienced with vintage mics at all which is why I've come here to gather help (thank goodness for the internet!).
The problem with the mic is that it only outputs noise, no useful audio. The noise is very active, it sounds almost like a sandstorm. It is a beautiful sound, but I would prefer the sound of a working mic of course!
Is anyone here able to identify which component might cause this kind of noise?
Also, is anyone here aware of anyone within the UK who is able to service these kinds of mics?
Thanks for reading, and if anyone can help at all - that would be really fantastic!
Cheers!
Mike.
