covers
« on: September 06, 2004, 08:43:41 AM »

hi all,
back from vacation and relax. what's your approach to cover songs? I mean, most of the band I know tend to cover the song exactly like the original. I really can't.
Opinion?

I think the majority of covers weren't really worth it. A few really were. But there's absolutely no point if it sounds exactly like the original.

Or pick something obscure enough that nobody will know it's a cover until they look.  Twisted Evil  Very Happy

Yeah, they gotta have your stamp on the tune if you're gonna do it. I always dug the Jawbox cover of "Cornflake Girl". Good example.

Jawbox's best cover was a Cure song.  Showed that Robbins actually has a sense of humor.

There's a cover on Shudder to Think's Pony Express Record that fuckin' slays, but I can't think of the title or original artist right now.

hmm. yeah. "meathook" by the cure. Haven't heard it. But while googling I found a site I haven't been to for a long time:

I feel a Six Degrees of Jawbox thread coming on.

despite my extreme distaste for "ironic" covers (ie punk covers) there are a couple that come to mind which are absolutely wonderful.

macha + bedhead - believe (voice shifting included, telephone beeps added)

elbow - independent women (done to a polka'ish tune with thick scottish accents)

Luna had a wonderful cover of Sweet Child O' Mine...my good friend loves it and he's a die hard GNR fan, you know the kind that listens to Appetite everyday all the way thru....

Tool's cover of Led Zepplen's No Quarter was awesome. As well as the Kyuss cover of Black Sabbath's Into the Void.

Speaking of Zepplin covers, I quite like Leftover Salmon's version of "When the Levee Breaks"!

Definitely a departure from the original!
