Earwax and other matters of the ear....

A lot of great information, though mainly focussed on how to deal with earwax once built up.

What do you folks do to help slow the build up of earwax?
Has anyone noticed the influence of diet in this area?

If you understand the way the ear works, you will know that hairs and hair cells in the inner ear canals are a critical part of how our auditory system works, yet something that I only discovered from reading the above referenced article is that individuals with lots of hairs in their outer canals are more prone to the build up of wax.

Personally, I sometimes am prone to eczema in my outer ear canals, and this makes my ears generate more wax. An ENT specialist prescribed using drops of a betamethasone solution - typically used as a scalp application - which when used regularly (a couple of drops in each ear every couple of weeks) has pretty much seen my ears remaining eczema free for several years now, which has in turn greatly reduced the build up of wax, and the subsequent need to have them cleared out every once in a while.

If I do feel a little build up of wax, I treat it early with Otex drops (hydrogen peroxide) which softens the wax greatly, usually enough for it to dissipate on its own.

FWIW the best site I ever came across for info on how the ear works was this page on a hearing aids site:

I have been going thought heck for the past couple of weeks. I got "infected" a week ago last Saturday. Cough, fever, headache, congestion and plugged ears. I am getting better but the congestion is really severe. Any remedies? I cannot take any type of decongestants so I have been doing the vaporizer, Vicks Vaporub and hot tea, honey and lemon. Even the "put a towel over your head and breathe in hot steam" routine. I do Netipot but so far nothing seems to help. I have three mastering jobs in house and I want to get better so I can hear. I went to the doctor's office yesterday but they did not offer any real solutions. Thanks in advance.

My home way to salvage such is short but very hot bath in a bath-tub (you should not try it if you have heart issues- it produces rather big load for it) and then immediate lay-down in bed with double duvet/blanket used not too loose warmth too fast and stay like that as long as possible until you feel you should change duvet (because it gets quite wet). Of course I complement it with C vitamin striking shot if possible + drink lots of liquids, because of sweating. Hot tea and honey are great. Note that lemon served with tea looses C vitamin completely if tea's temperature is above 60 Celsius deg (140F ?), so it does not have any effect then.

I had it happen to me a few times too, I think (Glue Ear due to viral or bacterial infection/bad cold, real name: otitis media with effusion). The best thing for it is to do the classic diver's trick of holding your nose, closing your mouth, and blowing gently. Nothing might happen the first few times, but if you keep doing it every couple of hours, things start to clear. Not giving medical advice, just saying what worked for me! I had it really badly once for about eight weeks. I went to an ENT specialist, and he stuck a camera and an air tube up my nostril, to see the blockage and try and re-open it with the air. Was cool watching it all on the screen! He was the guy that told me about the diver's technique.

for congestion, i have an allergy inhaler that was from an allergist.  the nose spray never worked for me. . .  i can usually get away without using meds with green tea with honey and nice hot showers.

for earwax, i take hot showers and let my ear canals fill up with hot water.  then drain them out a few times.  after the shower, i mix a solution with half and half hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol.  the peroxide seems to help with loosening up the wax and the alcohol helps dry the water out.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am still having problems. I am going to see my Primary Care Physician tomorrow. They have confirmed that I have fluid behind my eardrums, complete with bubbles,  and that I probably have an infection since I have an ear ache in both ears. I wish they had done all this last week. Netipot seems to help but not for long. Thanks again!!!

UPDATE:

I went to see my Primary Care Physician and he has referred me to an ENT Doctor. Hopefully I can see him or her soon.
