What program are you using to zip files?
« on: January 11, 2014, 07:38:09 AM »

The program I am using to zip files is 7-zip http://www.7-zip.org/ It seems pretty good but lately I zip a 128 MB file and when I unzip it to check it it shows 124 MB file size and I am not sure why.  Sometimes it says some of the files were changed. Any suggestions would be most welcome. I use both Mac and PC but most of my mastering is done via a PC. Thanks in advance.

i've used 7zip on windows before and works well for me...  on osx, i just use the native zip utility.  never really had any problems.  your file size discrepancy seems strange to me.

I rarely use 7zip, but when used, never encountered such issue with it. I believe such programs use crc to detect deflation problems, so there should be an error reported (however my 7zip does not inform that the file was extracted successfully, either).
Once I had similar problem with another program (don't remember which one), but finally found a root cause (gave it a second try)- disk full :). Of course an appropriate message popped up, but I lost it during windows switching and closing program :). Of course file was smaller than it should. Some programs leave partially uncompressed files on disk in such case, but some remove them- maybe try to check how 7zip behaves under similar conditions.
Btw. I use linux (connected to internet) utility to compress files.

On Windows I use Winrar for zip and rar.
If I created the files I have the habbit of including MD5 checksums to verify all is identical to the source after it's unpacked.
Maybe you can try this to see if there is a discrepancy?

Ditto here.

I've used a normal zip format on Windows. A zip file has a -read in and -read out error processing. If a non match occurs, the file fail safe's to corrupt. A MD5 check sum is a good idea too.
