Dealing with jerks...
« on: November 17, 2013, 06:31:13 AM »

I saw an ad on the local craigslist a while back for an item that interested me. In my usual practice I Google’d the said item and discovered that the Craigslist add was asking more for the item than it would have cost brand new. I emailed the individual, referenced several online sources to show the current prices, and made him an offer that I thought was fair.  The next day I received an email telling me that the item although purchased almost a year ago still was brand new, and that this individual wasn’t going to lose money on something he never used.  That should have been the end of it I suppose but being that the tone of the email was quite nasty and offensive, and being the bully-hating jerk I am, I RE’ed the ad on Craigslist with the price information so that others wouldn’t get screwed on the deal. The next morning I received a profanity laced tirade with veiled threats of physical violence, telling me that I needed to mind my own business. Now I suppose I should have left it at that, but being the afore mentioned jerk I am, I just couldn’t let it go. Especially after being threatened.  I replied to the email, and simply stated that I was rescinding my previous offer, and stated that if he wanted to sell this item he would need to lower the price whether he liked it or not. I never received a response, and I'm not planning to escalate the situation any further even if the Bozo does. I was just curious if anyone else has had a similar experience buying or selling stuff?

Dean... the world is full of psychos... dropping it from here on out will probably be your best bet.  At the end of the day what do you really care if the guy sells his item or not -- or for how much [unless he's selling it to you,and it seems that ship has pretty much sailed].

I sincerely hope that's the last you hear from the seller!!

Peace

You could send copies of the emails to the craigslist problem and admins  to allow them to restrict the activity of the offending user.

You might consider sending a copy to the local sherif and let him look up the person and threats.  This puts him on record for when he does do something.

Too many nuts, not enough law enforcement. Modern society is too dangerous to attempt to do any policing yourself. Let's hope your address wasn't included in the ads. If so, you may have additional steps to take for self protection. I suggest exercizing your Second Admendment rights, if you don't live in one of the Socialist States of America or DC.

Thanks for looking out for me guys. I have received no further correspondence from Mr. Bozo. This happened a little while back and I figure thats the end of it from my perspective, although he keeps renewing his CL post, which tells me he hasn't had an offer he would accept. I also use an untraceable email address for any Craigslist stuff for just such a situation.  All my replies to him were extremely polite, and I didn't even address his bad attitude. I didn't get to be an old curmudgeon by being stupid. I was just curious as to whether any of you guys have any anecdotal stories about dealing with someone who was this totally out of touch with reality. It's just like you see on the Pawn Stars program where people get offended when Rick and the gang won't pay ridiculous prices for things. You don't try to sell something you think is worth a lot of money to a freaking pawn shop in the first place, then get mad when they won't offer you a million dollars for it. You also shouldn't get offended when people on Craigslist won't spend more than current brand new prices for something thats not new. dino
