Neumann Mic Tech Recommendation

My favorite Neumann factory-authorized service technician, Tom Onofrio, has just gone independent. I have watched Tom's work for decades (he was with Neumann/Sennheiser in Connecticut for 20 years), and always appreciated his competency and the high quality of his work.
If you need Neumann service, especially on solid-state mics, including all contemporary models, contact him:

Will he provide faster service than the "official authorized" service in the past?
Will prices be more reasonable?

I am as eager as you to find out the answers to these questions, and am looking forward to reports on this forum about customers' experience with Tom as an independent agent.

Good Morning!
I'm happy to report that on Klaus' recommendation I sent 2 mics to Tom Onofrio for repair and I'm pleased with the results.
I had a TLM193 with the ever-popular intermittent hum issue that I sent, along with an AKG C391 with intermittent no output/hum.
Tom was fast, communicated well and fixed the problem, all at a reasonable price.
My experience with Tom Onofrio's work was indeed positive!

Just wanted to stop by and throw in a kind word about Tom's work. We sent him one of our M49s last week that had developed a significant intermittent noise issue. He cleaned it up and got it back to us in record time. Plus his rate was extremely fair, and he's real easy to communicate with. I'm planning to send him a lot more work in the near future. Thanks for the referral Klaus!

Thanks again, Tom!

Per Klaus' recommendation, I sent my non-functioning U89 to Tom Onofrio a while back. I am pleased to report I got it back promptly, competently done, very reasonably priced, and with satisfying communication about what was wrong and what he needed to do.

One more data point: A week ago Friday I sent a second-hand Neumann RSM 190, with its matrix box and a pair of multi-core cables, to Tom Onofrio for checkout and repair. I got everything back exactly one week later. I tested the mike on the bench that night; everything seems solid.
Labor charges were $225. That seems pretty reasonable since there were four items to check out, and actual work needed to be done both on the circuit board and the interference tube of the microphone. Plus this isn't a very common model, with features and issues that studio microphone don't generally have. Most self-styled microphone technicians probably couldn't diagnose or repair it properly.
Packing for shipment was thorough and careful, and there was good communication throughout, though he's a bit on the terse side when it comes to email messages.

That's because he's busy fixing mics

Not sure we need another data point, but Mr. Onofrio has worked on 47FETs and KM84s from our studio and everyone was very pleased with the results. A true pro.
