SOUND CARD RECOMMENDATION NEEDED
« on: April 22, 2013, 10:28:47 AM »

Hi:

New here and would surely appreciate any thoughts on this subject for I know only enough to be dangerous. :)

I apologize for this being a little lengthy but trying to describe the situation the best I can to save time.

I have a project studio I use for radio ads, tv audio, online audio etc. that's certainly not state of the art but it works.

I use a TASCAM MX2424 along with a RAMSA Da7 and mixdown to a computer using an E-MU 1212M card, via SPDIF.
I've not had a complaint regarding the mp3's produced from any broadcast station etc. but have a small problem now
that's more of an inconvenience than anything.

I recently purchased a Workstation running Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit which now functions as my main computer and
where I produce my multimedia/video work etc.

Whenever I need audio for one of my projects, I have to record on the 2424 and then mix to the other computer
and then slide the audio file into a dropbox folder to get the file.  I'd much prefer mixing down directly to the workstation
but am at a loss as to what sound card to buy.  (I'd prefer to leave the e-mu 1212 in the other computer but I'm
also pretty sure it wouldn't work on windows 7, 64 anyway according to my research)

Is it my understanding that since I've recorded on the mx2424 via the Da7 that all I really need to "mix down"
is a pretty basic, good quality sound card with SPDIF ins/outs?  (Since the a/d converters are in the da7?)
(This the part where I kinda know enough to be dangerous as mentioned) :)

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.  (Keeping in mind Windows 7, 64 bit)  I really don't want to spend
any more than 500 dollars if possible or anything less would be most welcome!  I read somewhere that if I'm merely
transferring digital 0's & 1's and not converting, the sound card doesn't HAVE to be like an RME or something.

I'm very much confused by scanning the web for answers and I thank you in advance for any thoughts or advice!

Best regards, Bob

I put a no name $19 sound card in my Win 7 machine with S/PDIF I/O. Works like a champ.

If you're just transferring simple 2 channel files in the digital domain... like Jim said, pretty much anything will do just fine.

Peace

Thanks for the confirmation Fletcher.

Yes, I mix down my MX2424 tracks on the Da7 board
and send the 2 channel SPDIF to the computer to record
on Sound Forge.

Just need to find a relatively decent PCI

whoops...hit the wrong button....

was saying just need to find a somewhat decent inboard PCIe
or outboard that will work on windows 7, 64 bit.

I've seen some on ebay actually new and cheap like m-audio 2496
that supposedly offers updated drivers for windows 7, 64

Still looking around...maybe there's a newer outboard that's
"ready" for w7 64 and not too pricey.....may need some extra
inputs down the road...

THANKS for the reply!  Appreciated

Why not USB? My only thought would be to get the conversion out of the computer. I have the M-Audio card you mention and it may not play nicely with all computers. They can be susceptible to a low level "computery" noise that is clearly noticeable on quiet music passages. Some kind of clock circuitry getting into the signal. Too bad too.. because it otherwise it sounded fantastic. Upgrading to their balanced Delta 44 took care of the issue. Considering that a decent 2 channel USB interface will probably outlive your computer, why dick around with noisy internal card slots?
You could also put a firewire / USB Pci card in the computer and have even more options.

I'd trade everything I own now for a good sounding room and a bucket of 57's.

I would have used an M-Audio 9624 card I have lying around, but the PC only had a PCI Express slot. That's why I went with the $19 sound card, it was PCI express.
