Differences between AES/EBU and Balanced SPDIF???
« on: April 14, 2013, 10:34:24 AM »

I just purchased one of these for our video editing suite.http://www.musicalfidelity.com/products/vSeries/v-link192/. It has balanced SPDIF output as well as an unbalanced output. I am going to feed this into my DAC-1. I was wondering about feeding the balanced output into the AES/EBU of the DAC-1. I read this information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S/PDIF and this http://rane.com/note149.html and this http://www.hardwarebook.info/S/PDIF but they all say that SPDIF is unbalanced and AES/EBU is balanced. I can just run the output from the V-Link to the Benchmark unbalanced (short distance) but was wondering what would happen if I used the balanced SPDIF into the AES/EBU of the Benchmark.?

Thanks in advance.

I think the difference between the spdif and AES stream is within the subcode.  For example, my CD player outputs spdif, and there's error detection bits, that SADiE can read when doing a digital transfer. Of course, there's the copy protection bits as well.  On my DAT machine (used it yesterday for transfers), the AES-out doesn't carry those bits.

Both outputs on the Music fidelity are galvanically isolated, so I would expect them to play well with the AES and spdif inputs on your Dac-1.  Let us know how it pans out!
