I have recently heard that USB-based audio interfaces get noise crackles in the recorded sound due to other USB devices connected to the same USB controller, i.e., if you connect your USB audio interface next to your keyboard and mouse and DOK and whatever, there's some kind of a 'digital crosstalk' (not sure how to call it) between all of these devices and it's audible on the recorded audio signal.
The alternative is to use a FireWire audio interface, as long as it's not daisy-chained with any other FireWire device. Because the FireWire audio interface is exclusive to the FireWire port, it won't get this 'digital crosstalk' pops and crackles. I guess we can say the same thing about connecting only the USB audio interface without any mice or keyboards, but we always need those in USB root hubs (also not sure how to call them
, by "root hub" I don't mean the regular hubs you buy to have more USB inputs on your system, but the actual USB controller).
