Downloaded all 11 tracks yesterday! Are we doing groups this time, or shall we comment on all?

Yup, just go ahead and make two groups in your post, and comment on individual masters, in their respective groups.

I am doing the SAI group listens mainly.

Sorry, not quite getting it Kayo, we choose any half of the tracks, and only comment on those? What are the groups? Or were the two groups members already posted/PMed and I just haven't seen them? Forgive me for being slow!

Not a problem..
As an example, you can do both groups in one posting:

SAI Group:

Master 1
Master 2
Master 3
Master 4

YAAR Group:

Master 1
Master 2
Master 3
Master 4

_____
Hope this helps.

SAI

Name  RMS  PEAK
KAyo -14.9 -.3
Very good!  I like the way the presence come out in the voice and accordion (or accordiojn like instrument), but it may be a trade off with the lack of fullness in the low mids.  at the end it opens up nicely on the highs especially in the stereo info.
LudwigM -14.3 0.0
Very good!  Maybe pusihg too close to the digital ceiling. . .
OTRM -14.7 0.0
Nice.  I feel like i'm missing some clarity in the mid range and upper mids and also missing a bit of the impact of the kick drum and low end transients.  also pushing a little too close to the digital ceiling. . .
GGidluck -15.1 0.0
very bright!  way too much on the top for my taste.

YAAR
Name  RMS  PEAK
Hynes -17.8 -.3
very good.  you didn't trim the front or end?  i like it a lot. probably quieter than most clients would prefer, but very good.
mmarra -13.5 -.4
you didn't trim the front or end?
OTRM -14.7 0.0
nice.  maybe could have been a bit more open in the upper midrange.
Lowland -14.2 -.2
quite a bit of clipping and crackling going on.
Babaluma -17.1 -.3
very good.  probably quieter than most clients would prefer, but very good.

there are my notes and first impressions.

Hi, the SAI group

This is what I discovered, after a speaker and headphones listen.

LudwigM:
The tone of the master shows an assured character.
The drum smack felt better. Low/mid/high shared a snug fit. Un-fatiguing high mid work. .kudos there.
The RMS is on the heavy side. A tad dark, and slightly mono in vibrancy.
Enjoyed it nonetheless!

OTRM:
Opened-up and freshened up the low-mid and mid work. Broad and big, fills the room! Sturdy body, though a touch overzealous cowboy RMS.
Emphasis on the mid tone sculpting some fatigue is felt.
Likewise, perhaps tucked in tight, clutched too firm with a whip of over mono darkness.
Still, well done!

GGidluck:
If it weren't that high octane bright and over sprite. It could have been a clearer attempt to listen and judge.
Could be monitoring, perhaps a revisit is required.

As always, thank you for the jam-up.
Will post the technical stuff, shortly.

Cheers,
KAyo

Although the songs weren't quite the full-on slabs of sub-continent I’d hoped for but more ‘international pop with ethnic elements’, they’re fine pieces in their own right, well recorded and performed: thanks very much for providing them, KAyo. I listened to the mastered versions, and when I looked at the notes I’d made I found I was in pretty much complete agreement with BiigNiick - please let his comments also stand as mine.

The most beautiful sound for me was that of Michael Hynes, though the majority of my clients, very few of whom are loudness freaks, would want significantly more level. My overall favourite by some way was BiigNiick’s version of both tracks, which I thought had nicely judged level, dynamics and EQ while retaining more than a passing acquaintance with the mix – well done.

Although I hadn’t thought about it before I signed up to this WUMP, it struck me once I heard the original mixes that there would be little point in just doing what I do every day: while a ‘conventional’ run would be in a similar region to the majority of offerings here, I felt like moving out of the comfort zone for a bit and trying something new. EQ was fairly normal: a little brightness added with the BAX, pulling back a slight honk in the vocal region via the Great River MAQ-2NV and tailoring the low end a bit more, but then I used two compressors in series, something I rarely do, and with in one case an unusual (actually, never used here) setting.

It seemed to me that Yaar, my chosen track, could do with more density, so the signal went through a Foote mastering compressor using the Nonlinear mode which allows slower transients through while reacting quickly to faster ones; following that I had a pair of Chandler LTD-2s where the settings were more for vocal control. At the time it felt as if I was achieving the goal I set, but I suspect others may not feel the same way!

Not to worry: if nothing else I’ve learnt about the context in which something doesn’t work as well as I’d hoped, and in mastering where we’re typically dealing with relatively small moves for me that can be as useful as more positive knowledge.

Thanks everyone.

Well put Nigel.

Collectively, we all always gain a lot from the PSW WUMP's.
Thanks for taking part. 8)

Sorry for being a bit late! Here are my techniques and notes...

First of all, thanks once again to Kayo for providing such great tracks. Really great stuff!

TECHNIQUE:

When voting I chose Yaar, because I'm a huge Reggae fan, and this track had a wonderful Reggae riddim, so that's the one I really wanted to master. I absolutley love this track! For me, the most important thing in Reggae is that unquantifiable groove or feel, so this was my main focus in mastering it. It has to make you want to bump and grind. The vocal is obviously leading the track, so this was the next main focus.

I thought the mix was great to start with, but knew I could probably bring out some more clarity, space and groove.

The file went straight from the DAW to the RME to the Crookwood transfer DAC to the Chandler Germanium Compressors with no pre-processing.

I set the compressors for a deliberately "strong" signature, by using the "Dirty Comp" setting (adds quite a lot of second harmonic distortion. I don't normally use this setting in mastering, but was going for more of a 70's Reggae vibe, and felt it suited the track well), and using the "Germ Medium" curve setting, which has quite a sqidgy/chewy charcter. The side-chain was set at 300Hz, so that none of the bass frequencies were causing the comp to clamp down. This hopefully left the bass sounding big, fat and natural. Ratio was at the lowest setting. Attack pretty slow, and Release quite fast, set to enhance the off beat bounce of the riddim, for added toe-tapping-ness. The Output Gain and Feedback controls were set for a slight low end boost and a slight high end roll-off, one of the more "coloured" settings.

Next it was into the Pulllet EQ. Here I slightly boosted at 2.5kHz with a medium bell to help the vocals pop. I cut a little with another medium bell at 500Hz to reduce mud/enhance clarity. I added a shelving boost at 15kHz for air. That was then sent to the Chandler TG2 preamp for 40dB of make-up gain.

Next into the Bax EQ. HPF at 30Hz and Low shelf boost 1dB at 74Hz, this combination of settings gave me the Dub Reggae style bass presence I was after, without being too flabby. I cut 0.5dB with the high shelf at 18kHz, and also added the LPF at 18kHz. The combination of these settings with the Pullet shelving boost gave me an enhanced high end without slicing your ears off.

This went to the Crookwood capture ADC/RME/DAW combo. I clipped the converter about 15 times in each channel throughout the song. This gave me a little loudness, and meant I wouldn't have to apply so much limiting later. I used Voxengo's MSED to reduce the gain of the M channel by 0.4dB for a very slight stereo width enhancement. I liked how it sounded on the percussion and effects, and the combination of this reduction, with the Pullet mid boost in the vocal, sounded great.

I then took the captured file and ran it through Voxengo R8Brain Pro to SRC from 48 kHz to 44.1 kHz, with "Extra Steep" and "Minimum Phase" filters, and set for "No Clipping". I imported this file back into Audiomulch for Limiting with Voxengo Elephant. Input Gain 1.9dB, Output Gain 0.3dB, 4x Oversampling and El Uni algorithm, for a maximum of 2dB of limiting, with no overs or ISPs. Finally I used Sonoris Dither to go from 32 bit float to 16 bit fixed for the final file I uploaded.

NOTES ON YAAR:

 -0.35 dB   -10.54 dB      5:05 WUMP 26_mmarra - YAAR
-0.29 dB   -14.76 dB      5:05 Wump YAAR Michael Hynes
 -0.11 dB   -11.12 dB      4:52 WUMP26_BiigNiick-YAAR
 -0.20 dB   -11.15 dB      4:51 WUMP26_lowland_Yaar_44_16
 -0.04 dB   -11.74 dB      4:52 WuMP26OTRM-YAAR
 -0.33 dB   -14.06 dB      4:51 YaarGreggBabalumaHermetech

Also in agreement with what has already been said regarding levels etc., it is always a personal choice when client gives no instruction on loudness. A few masters were showing ISPs, so I would be very interested to hear what any of you think about this, if you think it's a problem or not etc.

mmara - Nice, warm and loud

Michael Hynes - Clear and wide, went for similar level to me

BiigNiick - Fantatsic, "enveloping" big sound, was very interesting to read your process

Lowland - like the tight bass on this one, lots of ISPs

OTRM - Sounding good, although I fet there was slightly less clarity in the lower mids than some of the others

Thanks for this WUMP, it is always very enlightening to see and hear what others do!

All the best,

Gregg

Thanks for the comments. This flu did catch up with me and so I have been slow to get my listening and comments done.

I did want to echo what Kayo said about benefiting from the WUMP exercise. Two people commented so far and both said my master was bright. I guess I knew this. Since previous WUMP's I have moved to a new room and I am using cubicles and have dampened the back wall, as well as added bass trapping in two corners. I think maybe that overall there are not enough reflections so more work needs to be done to get things right.

I think I am getting the low end about right, just still grappling with how much on the top. Probably the fact that my hearing is not what it was when I was 20 is a factor too.

Thanks for taking time to listen and comment.
