Expansion time here. Too small 2nd room(10x10 maybe) and very multipurpose.
We are doing 'lathe cuts' on a pair of old Prestos, cassette dupes(yes), mastering indie,lofi, punk,hardcore, garage rock etc and in the middle of installing my 2nd Neumann VMS70 in there.

Will be some time before can make the 2nd room a bigger room.

Considering small option like Adam A7X and a sub. Found pair of Dunlavy SC-2A for sale---concerned they will be backs to the wall and in the face of engineer.

What sort of budget, dietrich?

PMC DB1 (passive, can be activated, sub available), Blue Sky Pro Desk (active, includes sub) and Unity Audio The Rock (active, sub available) come to mind, though AFAIK they're all more than the Adams.

ProAc Studio 100

For a small speaker they can sound pretty good when paired with a great amp and converters.

try the neuman/klein+hummel 120's, they're amazing for their size.

I've seen interest in these active speakers, which apparently sound better than the price would suggest:

A more up-market possibility would be a pair of Acoustic Energy AE-1s (passive), now known as the Classic:

The studio I was at in the late 80s had some early AE1s for evaluation, and I wouldn't let them leave the building. A later studio eventually bought that same set from the first place, and I used them in total for about 15 years' tracking and mixing with a couple of driver replacements. I was intrigued to discover a while back that until relatively recently Terry Manning used AE1s with a sub for mastering, don't know if that's still the case though.

i used them all through school and loved them :-)  you might consider a sub with them though. . .

I am confused about the ATC SCM11 passives. I have read that the version in USA is a pro level and different than the wood faced consumer version?
Spec wise they seem the same?

Local pair of SCM11 'consumer' version for sale. wondering if they are worth a try
