The Current Value of Neumann M50 Mics
« on: September 30, 2012, 05:02:14 PM »

You would have to look far and wide to find valuation information of these gems in the usual mic forums and chat groups.

So, where, of all places, can this information be found?
In the current New Yorker Magazine, October 1, 2012, on page 23!

"What the market will bear" is the key. The demise of many classical recording outfits hasn't affected those prices yet, but they may.

One company in the EU sold off three of them for $40,000 each about 10 years ago. They replaced them with AKG's. They prefer the results as it was done not for economic but sonic reasons.

I cannot imagine a current-issue AKG omni mic with performance so attractive that it put it in the neighborhood of an M50.
Do you know the AKG model? And do you have a source for your story?

I can't recall the company name, but I supplied the replacement mics. This was a reputable classical music recording outfit in the EU that replaced their 3 M-50's with 3 AKG 460B's with modifications I had done back when I used to modify microphones. (I no longer do that work so please don't ask).

They decided they liked the results best with the 460's so they sold off their M-50's.

That figure, and the whole transaction, to me remains hearsay, until and unless an independent source for the information is quoted.

Hearsay implies a third party, I talked directly to these folks myself.
Since my memory of that event is a bit faded and I don't want to go back and look through old reciepts, let's just forget I brought it up.

I did talk to an engineer friend of mine a few years back, who told me he sold a few pairs of M50 for £25,000 a pair (reluctantly, but he had to pay the mortgage) - but he still has enough left for his own use, of course.
