New speakers... possibly.
« on: August 21, 2012, 08:02:46 PM »

Howdy folks,

It seems that Jorge, the studio owner, is itching to try out some new speakers in the room.

Right now we have Dunlavy SC-IV's (non-A's) driven by a Bedini 803 Class-A amp and we both seem to be wanting to hear a more authoritative low end (20-60 Hz or so).

Possible candidates he's looking at are Tyler D1's (similar design to the Dunlavys) or maybe Revels (Ultima or Salon?). Anyone have any idea how the lowest end of either if these compare to the older Dunlavys?

I know it's tough to compare speakers not knowing anything else about the room but I thought I'd toss it out there to see what I could find out.

Thanks.

FWIW I found the PMC IB2 actives plus bass extension cabinets to be about the most revealing and controlled speakers in the low-bass I've personally heard.

They're expensive, but you wouldn't need separate amps - or DAC for that matter - and they'd be in a the general price area of high-range Revels + amplification; less if you didn't have the extenders, the other cabs are full-range.

BTW, you don't have to have blue...

the SCIV-A's in studio A here are definitely "authoritative" in the 20Hz-60Hz range. . .  you may try them out and you may have less of a learning curve switching to them.

Seeing as I had to learn new speakers AND a new room last year, this shouldn't be so bad.

I have a pair that is powered on the bottom end and go down to 7Hz. The MTM is pretty efficient and can be easily driven.

Hi Allen, Don't know if you or anyone else is interested, but I have a pair of Dunlavy SC-V that I am selling.
