110-220v step-up transformer recommendation request
« on: July 19, 2012, 03:47:13 PM »

Greetings,

We have a Neumann UN 61 power supply (for our UM 57 mic) that needs 220v. I would appreciate any recommendations for a step-up transformer from my typically 124-125v source. As the transformer will be in the studio, I hope to find a quiet one.

Thanks in advance!

Hi...  there are a bunch of possibilities - just to make it simple I suggest Hammond just because the brand is sold in a lot of places and it's not junk - so search this

HAMMOND - 176A - STEP UP AUTO TRANSFORMER

it ashould be around $47 plus shipping

does rough a half amp at 220(240) and should be more than enough...  they make bigger ones...  the VA rating gives you a clue as to capacity...

120VA is roughly 1 amp at 120 volts ac (Voltage times Amps) or 1/2 amp at 240 volts ac...  you generally do not want to run these at the full rating so whatever the VA is you want to knock maybe 20% off to arrive at your practical sizing.  If you want to do tape machines and things with motors it gets a little more complicated...  it would probably be prudent to "de-rate" to 70% of the VA rating instead of 80%...

I second that recommendation as I have had positive results with these transformers along with Hammond transformers in general.
