Need some advice here..
I printed a client a new cd for her finished
Master and as normal I used a higher quality
CD for it since its going to duplication .
She told me that the cd has a lot heavier bass then the
Previous one I gave her a week back ..
I couldn't replicate what she was hearing in my studio
So I asked her to return both discs for me so I could see what she was
Hearing ... Both the older cd and the new master cd compared spot on
On my audio analysis comparative in wavelab and
To my ears and analyzer ..
She said she played the bass heavy cd for 20 of her musician friends and they all agreed it was bass heavier ...
She said she is using a 1991 Pioneer cd player ,
She is wandering if the player is reading the higher
Quality cd different ... Needless to say I am at a total loss
What to do... I've never had this situation ever happen.
I told her she can come to the studio and watch me
Load both CDs that she returned so I can show that they are
Identical .....
Anyone ever have any similar issues with something like this ??

That's some pretty bizarre shit... if they were recorded from the same files through the same recorder... and played back through the same systems it should seem that they're going to be the same... however, if she played them back through different systems that could account for the difference [guessing?].

Best of luck with this struggle... no idea how to give you any really good advise other than to not get "defensive" about the situation [its not your doing -- its you and the client against the machines!!].

Looking into the way-back machine, IIRC early CDs had an optional pre/de-emphasis curve that would apply HF de-emphasis to the playback to compensate for pre-emphasis applied to the recording. To a civilian this SE de-emphasis could sound like bass boost instead of the actual HF cut.

So it seems there is a bit or flag set in the recording, telling the playback to apply the de-emphasis, or the playback machine is just misbehaving.

Hmm... how do you disable that function?  I've never seen that one... which is just another illustration of my "reproduction ignorance".
