My analog transfer console build
« on: June 28, 2012, 08:33:10 PM »

Here is the outside of the Analog Transfer Console I am building.

The outside is all done and the inside is about 1/2 done.

More pics to come later.

The case is from an industrial control system and the meters from an old Graham-Patten audio console that was scrapped

The Left and Right controls are A-B linear pots and the Stereo control is a stepped attenuator.

I am trying to make this look as retro as possible. The finish on the case is green hammertone with a clear aluminum panel.

The switch on the lower right is the power switch and I have to get a tag made for it.

Nice, I like it. Does it have its own tone generator or are you hooking it up externally? I've been thinking of adding a test oscillator for the chain and hooking it to one of the inputs.

Looks good Thomas!

Simple and straightforward.

Describe how you're gonna use it in your mastering workflow.

Best, JT

I do a lot of transfer work and this will go between the analog source and the Benchmark ADC-1 to give us the best possible  gain structure and allow us to balance the signals when there is no way to easily balance the output of the analog device.

Here are some preliminary specs so far.

Input impedance  100K ohms Servo Balanced

Output impedance  65 ohms Servo Balanced

THD 0.005%

Bandwidth 5 Hz to 100 kHz + 0dBU -.5 dBU

Dynamic Range 99 dBU

Signal to Noise Ratio ≥ -90 dBU

I will post inside pictures when I get everything finished.

I am using these as VU Meter buffers http://www.ebay.com/itm/VU-Meter-Driver-PCB-Board-Stereo-for-Two-VU-Meters-New-/250738439595?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a612cf5ab

It is not meant to be rack mounted but is designed to be free standing

It is 10.5 inches tall, 12 inches deep and 20.5 inches wide.

Very cool Thomas!

What pots are you using?

The left right pots are A-B Ohmite but I maybe going with something different.

The stereo stepped control is http://www.ebay.com/itm/24-Step-Attenuator-Volume-Control-Pot-Log-10KA-Stereo-1-/260785221476?pt=US_Amplifier_Parts_Components&hash=item3cb802af64

Definitely has an industrial vibe about it. I like the way it looks, how is it progressing and what components are you using inside?

I had to put it on the back burner for a while for two reason. We got really busy and we had some personnel changes so things have not progressed as fast as I would like. Maybe later this month I will get a chance to finish it up. When I get it done I will give a complete rundown of all equipment and a schematic as well as pictures of the inside. Thanks for your nice comments.

Hi Tom,

That's a beast you are building.  Very smooth looking!

I'm curious about the guts and how it is wired.  Is this thing just for watching? Also, did you consider using bar graph type displays like NTP or RTW?  How about PPM vs VU?

As soon as I complete it I will post a schematic and pictures of the inside.

I had four VU Meters and decided to use them. They are Sifam Meters http://www.sifammeters.com/ and were "salvaged from an old audio mixer made by Graham Patten

The "guts" are still being determined but are based around a Aphex 124A - Bi-Directional Audio Level Matching Interface http://www.aphex.com/aphex-products/124a-two-channel-level-interface/

Hope this helps
