Desk Maintenance
« on: June 18, 2012, 01:28:18 AM »

I'm not sure if this has been covered before but I didn't find anything when searching.

I've always had issues with the black laminate desktops that are common with brands like Sterling and Argosy. My problem is that my hands/arms leave marks all over the surface, making it look rather unsightly after a full day of work. Not that huge of a deal if you don't have OCD, but I do. Cleaning it up at the end of each day would probably be OK but I've had minimal success at getting the desktop to look as good as it did when it was new. Am I the only one that cares about this kind of thing? It's OK if I am. But there's probably at least one other person that suffers this first world problem like I do.

I use Windex everyday and once a month I use Countertop Magic which makes it look like new http://www.amazon.com/Magic-American-50332015-Countertop-Aerosol/dp/B003JN3TAI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1340015407&sr=8-2&keywords=countertop+magic

Hope this helps....

I haven't tried Windex. I'll give that a shot. Thanks!

Interesting. I'd be willing to give that a try, too. I guess not many people fret over how clean their desktop looks based on the number of responses :)

wouldn't vinegar smell bad?

i just wipe mine over with a damp cloth lightly impregnated with washing up liquid, when it starts to look bad.

Yes, spray-on window cleaner (sparingly applied) is what I use on my Sterling: discovered that by accident after cleaning the studio windows, interesting that others do the same. I think it's quite common for sprays of that kind to contain vinegar, and the result, for me anyway, is 'as-new'.

Vinegar's smell is gone once it evaporates. Stinky when wet though. It's real good at getting dirt and oil up and away, streak free... And it's cheap.

Tested Windex and vinegar and had similar results, though pure vinegar did a slightly better job. I still see some weird subtle streaks that only seem to come out if I use steam and a soft cloth. Why does this bother me so much?! I should have ordered a white desk.

I like your style. Sadly, I watch too much True Blood to be comfortable with that.

I never have anything other than dust on my consoles, so I'm not sure what the marks are.  Body chemistry?

Anyway, I keep my Sterling clean with Kleenmaster Brillianize.  Basic plastic polish, looks great.

It's just the natural oils from my skin. I've replaced the black desktop with a wooden one so I can't see the marks anymore. I probably get the award for biggest OCD on this board. :)

I've thought about replacing the surface with a section of wood, as they say in acoustics, "wood is good".  Just be careful writing on the new surface with a ball point pen.  It could be a whole other OCD opportunity.

The Pledge stuff is what I use, it's cheap, easy available and works nice.

For the sterling I use the multi surface everyday cleaner.

Go to the dollar store and get some microfiber cloths.

Great for cleaning equipment. I use them on my eyeglasses and computer screens. A little spray of eyeglass cleaning solution is all I use and with some things you don't need anything.

Best thing since sliced bread. (Really)

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of microfiber. We use them for just about everything at home. I have a couple that I've been using in my studio but for some reason, that black melamine surface refuses to be "perfect" regardless of what cloth or cleaner I use. And I've been cursed with needing it perfect for some crazy reason. Having switched over to wood, my OCD is at peace, and I haven't had to clean it once.

Haha, luckily they're easy to clean!

The only other thing that drives me nuts is dust. Seriously, it haunts me.
