The Sound Signature of limiters
Hi,

I have been doing some careful tests  with a bunch of limiters lately.

L3 Ultra seems to provide a bit more loudness than TC Brickwall Limiter II, Mc DSP ML4000 and PSP Xenon.

However, I feel that it makes some serious damage to frequencies over 6kHz.

Has anyone else noticed that?

I have tested different parameters, etc but the mix sounds unbalanced.

I have not tested the Ozone Limiting section carefully yet .

PSP Xenon sounds warm, TC BW II slightly high-middish.

Any opinions?
Thanks

i went through about a year ago and did a shootout with about 8 limiters and then setup a blind test for jerry.  our thoughts were the same after comparing notes on the top two limiters.  our favorite was the PSP Xenon now in use in both studios.  the TC, McDSP and Ozone were not in our sample set though. . .

overall, i like the Xenon a lot

I am also a big fan of Xenon, which is my daily workhorse along with TC BW Limiter II.

I bought Xenon when they had a sale on a couple of years ago, but have never given it a proper chance. I use Elephant most of the time, but perhaps it's about time I gave Xenon another shot!

It's been a while since I tried Xenon but I found it too coloured (soft/transients less defined) when pushed super hard, which is often what the job entails round here, whereas Elephant can be pushed, then you can go under the bonnet and start fiddling to find the best tweak from there. It's that second stage of adjustment which made me go with Elephant.

Both the Xenon and Elephant are good.   You should try each and see which works best for your style and sounds best to your ears.

I use Xenon. Not completely transparent, but it can be made nearly undetectable.

The Fabfilter Pro-L might be another one to demo as I think it is pretty transparent and have some slight character when dialed in to do that. It is also really flexible & easy to use plus the presets are actually good....a good starting point to tweak further. The Pro-L is my go to limiter.

I haven't demo the Elephant but I would like to put the Pro-L & Elephant against each other, one day, just for my own information

I keep Elephant and Pro-L ready to go at all times. As with all toys, I get fixated on the newest one, thinking it's the best thing ever. But eventually the honeymoon wears off and it's back to business as usual. I've tested a lot of limiters and these two are clearly better to me. It's due mostly to the advanced controls. I tested Sonnox and while it did sound pretty good on a lot of material, it was also easy to have some distortion slip into the fray if not careful.

I have always leaned towards the UAD Precision or the TC MD3.

But, lately, I've been dialling up the ..

>The wonderful BX_limiter
>and the FabFilter Limiter

Finally, a few alternatives to me favorites.
