Who is not using sub(s)?
« on: June 01, 2012, 11:33:12 AM »

How many on here using full range without subs? and which monitors..

enjoying the 801 M2/3 here without subs. not in love with the pushed high mids on them.

N802 in my room would need sub. D1 would not.
N801 not same league as current 800/802 models?

No sub here, ample information to 25Hz in room with PMC IB1S. I have always felt it is a step removed from ideal, an ass to integrate and better all round to have big mains.

The only subs in here anymore are from Subway.

6" BMT double-meat -- The regular doesn't really fill me up but the foot-long just has too much bread.  I've found that the double-meat option is the way to go - Especially with the BMT and the Spicy Italian (although the SI gives me a bit of heartburn occasionally, so I usually just stick with the BMT).

IMO/E, YMMV, etc., etc.

ADMITTEDLY, it probably wouldn't "bug me" much to run a set of parallel subs just for the occasional "uber-thump" factor when the hip-hoppers are sitting behind me -- But they'd have to be units that LP at like 30-35 and sink down to the mid-teens to make it worth the trouble...

No subs here, SCM20 ASL Pro's. Not ideal, but am checking low bass on HD600's and Voxengo SPAN. I've always preferred the idea of just mains and no subs, so am not looking to get one. I'd rather upgrade to bigger ATCs instead, when funds allow.

Maybe the only person here that has subs is Brad? And he's got a Grammy. So maybe we're doing something wrong?!  :)

Yeah but Brad has the 802's and they roll off at 39hz.  Subs really make sense with a 39hz roll off.  My Focal's roll off at 40hz.  My old room (small) a sub would have caused more harm than good.  If I was sticking with the Focal's in my current room I'd definitely get sub('s) but instead I bought a pair of Tyler D1's which are spec'd at 28hz.  Should be plenty low and everyone I have talked to said they actually extend lower than 28hz before roll off after break-in.  2 more weeks until they are here probably!

I didn't realize the 802's rolled off that high. They look like they'd go much lower... Maybe that's the 800's.

Actually they roll off at 34 Hz.

http://www.audioreview.com/cat/home-video/home-theater-packages/b-and-w/nautilus-802/prd_372922_4281crx.aspx

"Product specs and technical features:

Nautilus tweeter,3-way vented box system.

Kevlar brand fibre cone fst driver unit

Matrix cabinet

Flowerport

Frequency range: -6db at 27hz and 30k hz

Frequency response -39hz -20k hz +-2db b on reference axis

Crossover frequencies:350hz and 4k hz

Dimensions:

Height:43.5 inches

Width:15.2 inches

Depth 21.6 inches

Weight:154 pounds"

Not the greatest resource link but it was the best I could come up with via a quick Google search.  I was interested in a pair not too long ago though and when researching I read time and time again -2dB down at 39hz (not sure why the spec -2dB instead of the more standard -3dB).

Do you have a link where it states -3dB at 34hz or is that just your specific in room response?

I'd have to look it up, but I think I have my subs low-passed @33Hz, N802s run full-range. Whatever the actual settings, in my rig they yield a nice response down to 15Hz. No complaints from me.

Nice.

Yeah, I could be totally wrong but I was thinking about getting some used N802's a few months back and every time I searched for their spec'd frequency response I read -2dB at 39hz.

Perhaps that is just what it is on paper and their actual response is lower?

No idea, I just know in my room that's what yields the flattest response.

I don't put much faith in specs.  I contacted a company with enough of a discrepancy that they revisited their anechoic tests.

They emailed back and said "yeah, you were right", lol.

PMC MB1 with XBD. The XBD cabinet looks like a sub but it's not. It runs in parallel with the LF driver in the main cabinet - both covering the full <380Hz range. It's a very well controlled, rock solid, low distortion bottom that plays well at high and low volumes.

No sub in use here with the Dunlavy SC-IV/A monitors, except when working on 5.1 surround.

I move to the rear of the room to check the very bottom sub octave (below 50Hz) when finishing the EQ of a master, as the room works as a whole.

The other factor, I don't work w/ much Hippety-Hop or Club Dance music that's sub-centric.

With my previous setup I was using a pair of Focal CMS subs, because they matched the voicing of the hifi Focals. But those where bookshelfs anyway..

Now with the SM9s I don't feel the need for it. They go really down!

Thinking of trying out a focal CMS sub to expand my solos at some point, which focal speakers were you using?

I'm still fully in love with my Geithain RL901Ks ... no sub ... I think they're spec'ed for a -3dB point at or below 25Hz.  I seem to recall that some magazine or website included them in a shootout among dedicated subwoofers, and they apparently did well. (heh)

No subs here. My system goes plenty deep. It's not the chest-hitting type of bass, but that's why I like it. I seem to "get" it very well so I'm not installing subs in the foreseeable future, either.

Lipinski L505's, so I use a sub for sure. Yamaha HS10W. It's not an expensive sub and does the job.

K&H O300 D

I've recently read that the last pair of these and 0 300 have been sold from the factory and that they've been discontinued,.. which is a bummer because I've heard nothing but good things about them.

I've heard rumors of this for some time.

I'm quite happy with these speakers and my room, and I'm so used to the sound that the thought of changing speakers or room almost seems scary.

I have been on the fence past week with regards to trying out a pair of Dunlavy SC1 or SM1 with two subs in the room. Yes going against my goal of two full range that do not need subs.

What are people experiences with either SC or SM?

My next monitors choices of ATC SCM100 or Geithain 901 will not make 2012 budget. Dunlavy SC-IvA placement issues stress me out :-\
