single space lunchbox for AMS Neve 1073LB modules
« on: May 16, 2012, 05:19:17 PM »

I've been poking around lately trying to find a single space lunchbox that works with the 1073LB modules. Neve only approves the 500-6b lunchbox but I'd like to find a single rack mountable lunchbox to add a pair of 1073lb's to my inventory. Does anyone know of rack that will work with the 1073lb's?

Thanks in advance,

John

There are no single space lunchboxes... but, its not difficult to get the appropriate edge connector and wire it up with a ±16vdc power supply... total cost of doing it that way would probably be under $200 and maybe 90 minutes of your time.

Ah -- reading is FUNdamental... I originally read this as single space meaning "single slot".  My bad.

There are a few, as noted the A-Design unit... but there is also one from Empirical Labs which has an EXCELLENT power supply... but even cooler, the modules "flush mount" with the face panel of the unit [rather than sitting above the face panel on the rack mount unit].

Apologies for the previous / irrelevant response.

I read somewhere you need to file the card to fit a 1073LB into the Empirical Labs unit. Do you know anything about this?

I hadn't heard anything like that... as its a standard sized edge connector, unless Dave has the placement of the connector off a bit [depth wise] there shouldn't be a problem.  If Neve® made the card too long, that could be a pretty universal problem with most lunchboxes / frames.

After looking at the Empirical Labs unit it does seem the best one available. Thanks for the help guys! ;D

I know the power supply is solid... and that's really the largest thing on these things.

There are no single space lunchboxes...

Alas, it would appear that this too, now exists.

Some say it doesn't have enough current in the PSU for a 1073LB. The Empirical Labs unit seems to be the ticket.

I know the Empirical Labs frame works great... the power supply is top shelf, if I were going to get a 2 slot powered 1RU frame... that is the one I would get.

Advice taken Fletcher. This seems to be the only option. TKS!

Works beautifully. The 1073lb only fits in space 1 FYI. I absolutely love both the 1073lb and 550b eq modules.

I only have one 500 module here, a custom jobby. Rather than spend more than that module cost me to mount it I went cheapo.

Got a 15 pin Elco connector from Mouser for about 4 bucks. Then a Power One + - 15 volt supply for about $45 will do it. Add pigtail XLR's and it all just sits there, not sexy but very functional and affordable.

Rather than spend $45 on that Power One finished power supply I breadboarded one up with 317/337 regulators and a TL783 high voltage reg for phantom. I decided to go very safe and used a 16 volt AC wall wort.

No code vialations, no fire risk, no shock hazzards. Total cost was about fifty bucks. The power supply noise is very low compared to most commercial designs.

Certainly a good way to go... though few have the skills to build a PSU on a breadboard [but kudos to those that do!!].
