Yes, this is what I just don't get. If they were really concerned about sound quality, then why not just offer ALAC (lossless) instead of AAC (lossy)?

It's still hard to get 20,000 files on a device with Lossless or WAV. Convenience vs quality...

I haven't checked the file sizes with "Mastered for iTunes" but I suspect there's an order of magnitude size difference (at least) to an alac if it's a high-res source.

On the positive side, Apple mentioning the word "Mastered" is free advertising for our profession, and raises public awareness of our daily duties.

Definitely Jerry, in this era, bringing awareness to quality mastering is welcome.  Also, good fodder for the newsletter and blog.

More than one year has passed and what has changed? What are your impressions?

Seems most are working with celings at -2 < ceiling < -1.
