Amp for my new Nautilus 802s
« on: January 28, 2012, 09:02:29 PM »

Just picked up a pair of N802s and need to get an amp to pair them with. My budget is $5000. Looking at either a used Pass Labs X250.5 or a used McIntosh MC402. Any opinions on either of these amp with the N802? Other amps I should look into?

I've been dying to try a Classe with my 802Ds.  The Mac didn't do it for me with B&Ws, though I enjoy them with other speakers. I have a Bryston that I like.

I love my Bryston :-), so +1 there.

I think steve berson has an x250 powering n802's.  you may ask him what he thinks.

Anything (commercial or DIY) based on Hypex UCD400 modules with original (recommended) transformers and their power supply modules in dual mono block construction.

Tried several over the years, the Pass Labs amp just mates with the N802s perfectly, imo. Been running this set up for about eight years now, love it.

Like Brad I've been using Pass Labs X250's for a number of years now.   Definitely seriously cleans, lots of power, and matches very well with the Nautilus 802.   For a bit I was using a McIntosh MC252 which I also liked - but relative to the Pass Labs I found it to be a little slower on transients, and a little bit thicker in its lower mid reproduction - giving a bit "chestier" sound.  As I was battling at the time a propensity to hollow out mixes too much by either cutting or not filling in low mids I found that the Pass Labs led me to a slightly better perception in terms of having my processing decisions being more correct.  As always YMMV!!

Best regards,
Steve Berson
