RE20 foam all disintegrated....
« on: January 25, 2012, 12:36:01 AM »

I recently came into an old RE20. Still sounds good, but it souns 'loose' when turned in the hand. And: foam rubber dust falls out of it like a dirt shower when you do!

Strangley, though, it still has top end!!

Does anyone know how to open it up? I am assuming that it needs cleaning up in there, and probably new foam to cradle the innards. I'd love a little assistance with the process.

Thanks!!

...And more on my old forum (archived for your delectation!) Just search "RE20".

Even the size of the hex key necessary to open the top is mentioned!

OK! I have the mic open.

Is there a recommended solvent to clean the foam-rubber crap off of the mic's parts? I want to be especially careful with the capsule face (covered with thin netting). I may not do anything to that area, just to be careful.

Come to think of it, the mic does function and sounds good, so cleanup is kind of optional. Regardless- what solvent (if any) is recommended?

While we're discussing this, what might one use to clean the accumulated grime off the outside of the mic casing?

Thanks!!

So: I got impatient. I did clean the mic casing of all the old foam rubber dust with an old toothbrush, and carefully wiped down the soiled outside metalwork with a rag and a little ammonia water. Much better!!

For the most part, the electrical stuff was pretty clean- most of the stuff brushed away. I left the capsule and its gossomar screening alone....
