AKG 451 LB
« on: January 03, 2012, 11:45:49 AM »

Hello,

I was hoping that somebody could help me, I know what the AKG 451 E and the AKG 451 EB are (the EB has the bass roll off - right?) but what does the extension LB mean - louder bass perhaps? :)

I can find a few mentions of it on various studios lists but no information on what the differences are between the EB and the LB

Thank you for any suggestions

I believe the C451LB is simply an EB fitted with a Lemo connector.

I doubt it is any louder.  :)

Bingo!
Just go the confirmation from AKG in Vienna: "L" for "Lemo" connector. Otherwise the mic is identical. For a period,
Lemo connectors were a requirement for AKG mics delivered to the Austrian state broadcast system.

Aha, thank you both very much.

Just one question .....what's a Lemo Connector?

It's a rather expensive alternative to the xlr. lemo's are more commonly used in the medical equipment field, according to a company rep i spoke to some years ago when i was looking for some. i believe the ORF (Oesterreichischer Rundfunk- K.H.) used them for a time.

What's bothersome about Lemo connectors: their spring-loaded connection to the mic's counterpart is tentative in its grip and ability to secure a mic to a cable (in difference to a click, screw, or bayonet-type connection. Plus, Lemos are a pain to solder and assemble.

The pair that I was looking at are actually marked - engraved - ORF (Oesterreichischer Rundfunk) and so were obviously supplied to them by AKG, thereby keeping supplier and customer within the Austrian boundaries - probably not a bad idea sometimes.

Is it difficult to get hold of adapters (from Lemo to XLR) or does the reular XLR connection mate with the Lemo pins?

Thank you for your help.

no way can you mate a lemo with an xlr. i ended up finding a couple from dan alexander years back. i get the feeling he's been selling off the last of his pro audio gear lately in preference for guitars, so he might not have any more... but he's worth a try. when i was looking, new connectors from the manufacturer cost over $100 apiece.
