HDD price increases 40/50pct or so..
« on: January 10, 2012, 04:58:58 AM »

down to Thailand floods apparently, just buying my storage for the year. I am after an internal and external drive.

1TB SATA drive was £48.00 8 months ago and now they are around £85.00 - £100.00

Still not expensive for mission critical kit but it really shows how volatile the planet/markets are right now. :( Unfortunately I think we can expect this more and more as time goes on.

According to my salesman at MicroCenter the price should start to drop by mid summer. At MicroCenter you can only purchase one hard drive per visit. Their stocks are very low and getting lower all the time. The price just increased on Nikon Camera bodies also made in Thailand.

Yes some online stores appear only to have certain makes and models available.

I read there was a shortage of some 150,000,000 units globally and that 40pct of all HDD are produced in Thailand.

Right now I'm partial (!) to the WD black caviar 1TB raw drives.

I see the price has doubled to about 200 usd.

Significant, but not a deal breaker.

Luckily we have a couple spares waiting to put into use.

Recalls my first 660MB Pacific Coast Technologies full height HDD,

Back in 1990 it cost about $3,000,

Painfully slow and noisy.

Ah the good old days....

Sure I recall paying £300.00 a pop for SCSi drives. "660MB" lol.
I paid £600.00 for 10MB of Akai sampler memory about 14 years ago, madness.

In fact I purchased a 1TB WD external drive right now. If you bought the USB2.0 ones in theory you could open the case and use the drive (assuming theyand your system are SATA), managed to find one for £75.00 which is not bad. The one I have had has been problem free and very quiet.

I no longer need an internal drive (it was going to be for backing up) as I found one I have here saved for a rainy day. I have been opting for Samsungs for internal drives and WD for external.
