Our UPS for our mastering computer almost had a melt down/fire
« on: December 21, 2011, 06:10:51 PM »

I started smelling some really bad sulfur dioxide (rotten egg smell)  a couple of days ago in our tech room/machine room and it got worse and worse. At first I thought it might be a dead mouse but there was a electronic smell mixed in. I turned off all the equipment and it was still there. I started looking for hot spots and finally found one on the bottom of our APC UPS. It was too hot to touch. We took the unit outside using some oven gloves and I got out my trusty electronic temperature gauge and it read 140 degrees F. I took the cover off and the batteries were melted together and to the housing. I called APC and of course it was not their fault since I did not use APC batteries when I replaced the batteries last year.  Today I took the unit back to the place I purchased the replacement batteries from and they warrantied them out. I have never seen batteries get as hot as these were and it actually bubbled out all six sides of the batteries and split them open. Another thing to check once a week. The smell is almost dissipated but I can still smell a bit of it when I open the door. I never known a UPS power supply to have a problem like this. Live and learn.

Damn, that sucks.

Glad it didn't catch fire and really cause a problem!

We just replaced batteries in some of our APCs.

What brand were the bad batteries Thomas?

I'd like to make sure ours are not the same,

As Barney Fife would say, to "nip it in the bud"

Thanks, JT

You know this is the very reason I don't have a UPS on my computer right now.

1) I have a very quiet computer at the other end of my room and I know that UPS give off some odours which are rather unpleasant so I opted out recently. Power is stable here anyway.

2)Fire has also been something nagging my at the back of my mind. Something I don't trust about batteries and fire risk.

Defo send a message to the company and also can we know the model no. in case there is a design fault. I have some APC's in a few studios I was involved in building a while back, they industry leading products normally.
