KM 84A?
« on: November 30, 2011, 01:06:44 AM »

Does anyone know the difference between the "i" and "A" iterations of this mic?
I suspect the latter may not have a -10 switch but can't tell from any photos I've seen.

To the best of my recollection, the "A" suffix was an export item, and mainly to Asia (Japan) where they did not want a -10dB option for some reason.

I have only seen them up to around serial number 10,000, and, unlike previous KM mics with lower case suffixes, the "A" on the KM84 was a capitalized letter, painted right on the (usually TV-model-gray) housing tube, right next to the "KM84" designation. I cannot imagine it being any different from the stock KM84 of the day, except for the missing attenuator switch rod.

Maybe someone else can fill in more details???

The KM 84 A was a version of the KM 184 which an important Japanese broadcast customer special-ordered (and got) from Neumann, with the capsule head and rear sound inlet arrangement of the KM 84. So it would have had a transformerless output circuit.

I asked at Neumann/Berlin ten years ago; no more were available.

If the capsule arrangement of this special edition was that of the KM84, the mic would sound less bright than a KM184 with its modified porting arrangement.

So in essence, this was a KM184 amp with a KM84 capsule inside a KM84 housing?

That's as it was explained to me by a mutual friend we have at Neumann, although I don't think that the housing tube was either the stock KM 80-type sleeve nor the stock KM 180-type sleeve exactly, given that it had the rear sound inlet of the KM 84 but (evidently) no -10 dB switch.

--best regards
