Gefell small diaphragm metal capsules
« on: November 04, 2011, 10:27:51 AM »

Hello guys,

Just made the jump from the old forum [rather late, he he].

I've got a couple of SDC heads from MG that fit into the MV6xx amplifiers and they have to have their diaphragms replaced. Is MG still the best place to turn to?

This is the forum that questions everything. So the question comes up : why do your metal diaphragms need to be replaced?

If the answer confirms that conclusion, I believe that both Thiersch (who used to be in charge of metal diaphragms at Microtech Gefell for decades), and MG directly, would both be suitable places to have that work done.

I had the mics sent to MG for conversion to 48V phantom and XLR and they said the capsules were dead - which was true anyway! One of them never came to life and the other only when it felt like it.

I asked the question to see if the metal capsules currently at offer at Gefell and Thiersch are up to the "old standard".

Thanks Klaus!

Still not happy with you answer.

If you told me that "I took the car to the mechanic and he said the engine was dead", the first thing you would ask is: what exactly does he mean? Block cracked? Distributor cable from the coil fell off? Why does he want to replace the complete engine and all its (repairable/replaceable) sub-pcomponents?

Same with mics: did you get a detailed trouble report from MG that identified why the capsules (both of them, to boot!) can no longer work properly?

I am always incredulous when I hear generalized terms like "dead" in conjunction with complex machinery, because, too often the term hides repairable issues which are either beyond the service technician's capabilities to fix, or which don't make him enough money, compared to selling you new stuff.

I see your point and really appreciate your angle. I found the invoice sent to me from MG. I quote:

"microphone capsule M93 # xxxx/xxxx
repairing and measuring
1. replacement of basket
2. replacement of capsule
tested: basket and diaphragm damaged"

"microphone capsule M70 # xxxxx
repairing and measuring
- replacement of capsule -
tested: interfered by a third party, diaphragm broken"

"microphone capsule M58 # xxxx/xxxx

tested: diaphragm worn out"

This last one is the capsule that's partially alive, he he.
