dbx Type I expander modeling

Has anyone here had any luck trying to model dbx type I encoding using ITB plugs?  I'm prepared to experiment with it unless someone has already spent the time and had no good results.

I gave this a solid try, but ended up just buying a dbx hardware unit.

There wasn't any combination of expanders and EQ that came anywhere near the sound of the hardware unit - found it very inexpensively on eBay.

^^^^^^ Same here. I found a dbx type one for $99 at my local GC. The salesman did not even know what it was.

why?

I'm not sure about the type I distinction but as I recall dbx tape NR encoding was a full range 2:1 compressor with 12 dB of HF pre-emphasis (starting at 500 Hz, ending at 2k).

You will want to match the att/release times of the compression to get this very accurate. I'm not sure the RMS vs average detection is as big of deal as their marketing tried to make it.
