Weiss Advice
« on: February 21, 2011, 01:52:42 PM »

As always, the day before an attended session with a new client ...

My Weiss EQ (MkII upgraded with both DYN and LP boards) is playing silly persishers today. It won't boot except after re-booting itself a couple of times; but then when it does boot the bottom half of the screen is blacked out. If it boots and gives me a full screen it won't then pass audio, and if it gets that far and then passes audio that audio seems to be entirely the out of phase S signal. Last time I booted I thought it had locked o.k. but it then sent out a nasty 75dB spike, so I've turned it off and am using my emergency Vox Gliss EQ for any dynamical work.

Anyone else had this problem? Or anything like it. It's a clocking issue I'm sure and so I've been through all the usual practices, but still no go ...

Oh yes - I've contacted Daniel, but have had no reply. As he's normally very good at getting back I'm guessing he's away.

Cheers,

Eric

I've had to re-seat some chips once. I'll see if I can dig up which and why.

Well, it might have been something else... But maybe it's useful info.
My EQ1 acted up once, didn't pass audio and didn't display any eq curves
(selftest was fine though...)
They advised to take the square IC's out of their sockets and reseat
them properly. Using a PLCC socket extractor it was easy and the problem
was gone afterwards.

I couldn't find any pic of the inside but (in the EQ1) there are three
of these square IC that are 'nested' in a socket, no legs on the ic.
Wear an antistatic brace.

The guys from Joystick were kind enough to help me with this advice,
even though I didn't buy my unit through them.

Best of luck,

Thanks Bastiaan - could be onto something. I had a problem like this before and it got better last year after I'd swapped in some updated IC's (which fixed an M/S bug I'd never even noticed). I'll have a go and let you know what happens.

I wonder what I did with the schematic Daniel sent me ...

Fwiw, I had the same problem years ago and removing and replacing the chips "fixed" it.

Just wanted to note: Daniel has been in touch and is providing quite other-wordly levels of assistance and advice to get me up and running again.

Given that I originally bought the unit new from him about 8 or 9 years ago I'm guessing that the warranty has expired Cool but you'd never know it from the way he's dealing with things.

Cheers,

Never had such problem, but when the clock is interupted, I always reboot the EQ1 LP/DYN because sometimes it just does not let audio through, or it works not on spec. Other more standard Weiss Gambit units do not have this problem. It all has to with the fact the LP/DYN type is two machines in one.

The efficiency freak in me insists that this thread be renamed 'Adweiss'. Sort it out Eric.
