Websites - Personal Pic - Yay or Nay
« on: February 04, 2011, 01:19:25 AM »

I have noticed that about half the mastering websites I have visited have no personal "engineer" picture and the other half do.  I see advantages to both.  On one hand it is always nice to put a face with a place and on the other hand it seems it can be a bit self restricting (eg: that guy does not look like he would be into my music!).  Just wondering what others mindset are on this and why you chose to either have or forgo a personal picture.  I just updated some photo's on my site and am currently debating if a picture of myself helps or hurts.  Thanks in advance for the input.

I've sold my work pretty much only with my face. Must mean I'm pretty.

...

Face, no face.. I don't see it being a big issue, really. What matters is what you do.

My web-designer was very strongly opposed any personal pictures of me on the web-site. But he knows what I look like, of course ...

Ultimately it's your work that counts.

A picture probably won't get you more work, but maybe some online clients like to see what we look like?

Mind you, I'm noticing a trend here....

Sorry to go OT but hey, it's Friday, I'm doing QC listening, fedexing and paperwork...

If you want to add a picture, include it in a blog about yourself and your history, your hobbies and motivations, because any potential client will probably be more interested in you as a person, and what you are about, than anything else ephemerally aesthetic about you.

In truth it is an.

Entirely predictable.

Completely inevitable.

Foregone conclusion that.

Broadly, Mastering Engineers.

Are lamentably, un-photogenic.

This is 'why' they exist in isolation.

To this.

You must add.

An utter lack of form.

That equates to any kind.

Of intuition for proper Dress.

Fashion, or keeping oneself Vogue.

Which is 'why' they didn't stay on stage.

That.

Is an entirely.

Unassailable fact.

Borne out by testimony.

Of long suffering Wives etc.

And observed by Professionals.

In the Music Industry for Decades.

Although I don't believe he ever saw the post.

I once fielded the question of the availability of Silk Top Hats, to Dave Collins in Hollywood, on Gearslutz.

Only to receive a vividly rememberable backlash, consisting of inane matters of relevance, which prompt one to conjecture, as to precisely what the individuals concerned professional attire  consists of, in daily life?

One shudders to think! The decline in standards does make you wonder what the world is coming to, and what exactly has gone on in the Colonies, since the days of Abraham Lincoln!

At least DC has the sensibility and decency not to inflict his image upon potential clients and the long suffering public alike, and to spare the world at large.

There is enough suffering in it already.

It used to be the universal case.

That you started as a Mastering Engineer.

And if you were good, handsome and well dressed.

You made it into the Recording Studio and actually met Clients.

Today, it seems, the good looking crazy ones work in Recording Studios.

And those that would have only made the back row of the Chorus Line Talent.

End up in Mastering Studios, where the unsuspecting public, are free from the danger.

Of being frightened by the possibility of any kind of visual or physical contact. For the Internet.

Was actually, initially created, specifically to protect the public from the necessity of any direct contact.

With Mastering Engineers!

Is this to suggest that you will be posting your actual picture here?

If so, I will go to Akbar and Jeff's Silk Top Hat Hut, purchase their most impressive model, and add my picture wearing it to my website.

Right next to my extensive equipment list.

Eric. That is something I am unable to write about partly because apart from a few Major Decisions, many of the finer details have yet to be disclosed.

They won't be, until necessary, to those concerned. But even if I knew more I would not be able to write about it. I'm sure you fully understand.

You do work in a Philosophising Barn after all. That's why its hat is skew-whiff, it must have been scratching is head, whilst it's thinking!

Sometime ago.

I posted a lengthy diatribe.

That would have withered a lesser man.

Thanks for not taking offense, none was intended.

Quote: "If"

If a picture

Paints a thousand words

Then why can't I paint you?

It's what you are really thinking.

Isn't it?

Quote: "So"

So we'll go no more a-roving

So late into the night,

Though the heart still be as loving,

And the moon still be as bright.

For the sword outwears its sheath,

And the soul outwears the breast,

And the heart must pause to breathe,

And love itself have rest.

Though the night was made for loving,

And the day returns too soon,

Yet we'll go no more a-roving

By the light of the moon.

PSW is moving on.

Alas!

Quote :"I"

Aye.

That's right!

Quote: "I will"

Quite.

But he'll.

Say "I William".

For sure on the day.

I would bet a pound on it.

Quote: "I will."

Almost!

It's "I do."

That is precisely.

What they have to say.

It's strange you can't remember.

But trust, your lovely wife, is obeying.

You. In all things. Each and every passing day!

Quote: "go."

Yes!

I'm afraid.

We will have to.

Altogether too soon.

Quote: "to Akbar and Jeff's Silk Top Hat Hut"

You do know.

If you want to buy.

A Silk Top Hat in the U.K.

It will have to be, a Vintage.

Second Hand Model, they are so rare.

Quote: "purchase their most impressive model"

I really

Like a man.

That doesn't.

Do things by halves.

How is your dearly beloved?

Quote: "and add my picture wearing it to my website."

And.

A fine.

Portrait.

It will make.

Quote: "Right"

O.K.

Quote: "next to my extensive"

Now, now then!

Quote: "equipment list."

You mean.

You use equipment?

And I thought the only way.

Anything could sound that great.

Was through the means of Sheer Magic!

Quote: "Is this to suggest that you will be posting your actual picture here?"

You show me yours as promised.

And then I will show you mine, afterward, in time.

You know the drill, after all, you are a happily married man nowadays!

Love You All!

See, this is what happens in an attended session if the communication gets messed up.
I believe what the client said was 'This project could benefit from a touch more AIR!'

I have a few photos of my ugly mug up on my website and somehow it hasn't reduced the number of sessions I get (at least as far as I know).  I don't put my pic on the main page though - you kind of have to seek them out.

http://www.totalsonic.net/bio.htm

So - I kind of think the pic of the engineer shouldn't be emphasized on the website - but making things more "personal" at some place on the site does at least for me make it more interesting as a browser.

Steve Berson
