Ive read mixed results about the pbc6a being transparent or not, Is it??

If colored, where would it get its color from if there are no transformers inside there??

If there is no reduction happening, will it color the sound at all?

looks like it can be adjusted from gentle to brutal.

Transformers are not the only way to create color in an audio circuit.

If you have questions about a unit, rent, buy, borrow or go to one and listen. Best to try it in your own space with material you know well.

The PBC-6a uses a VCA in feedback mode to derive completely non-linear compression topology. It can be pretty "mellowing" of high frequency content and add some highly useful "binding" quality to the audio in a very cool manor. Plus, the Side Chain filter lets you change the way the compressor reacts to certain program material which is very helpful to find new sounds.  

I do agree though, that there are all types of ways to describe the subjective character of a piece, as the way it compresses or reacts to material can also be discussed. And surely, trying the thing out with your applications is the best way to get right down to the entire point of it all.

True; the audio path in this box is clean, nothing esoteric and shouldn't get in the way of anything ever, and its really just that the compressor cell is pretty innovative and has a lot of possible outcomes with its envelope shaping and tonal properties.

Clean - like white - is a color.  It can go from barely measurably low distortion to having a fair bit of distortion [in the Gearslutz world - aka "color"].  It is a remarkably musical and flexible sounding unit - more so than units I've worked with that cost 10X as many shiny ducats... whether or not it will be useful for your purposes only you can decide... but it totally rocks my world.

I have three FMR PB6a's and think they're the bomb.

The "Thick" switch can be "colorful" as well.  As Fletcher noted, they're amazing units for the dough.
