Sorry, my PM box is too full to permit me to reply, and I'm struggling to use the 'make pdf archive' function* (if anyone can help here, feel free!), so for now I'll reply here:

From a dealer that's probably not TOO unreasonable for a belt and all the "while you're in there" stuff... I thought that the factory change interval on a B6 might typically be longer than 40k, but age is also an evil little gremlin, specially if the vehicle has sat for any length of time.

Ask if it also includes any 'while you're in there' seals... (camshaft pulley seals and crank pulley seal for example) and such like.

If it's comprehensive, then the one remaining thing to do is to ask if they'll price match another VW/Audi dealership at ten percent off... -the reason being that most VW/Audi dealerships will send out fliers every so often with "10% off all service", to drum up business.

Also, I'm not sure if the Audi B6 3.0 30V is the same as the VW B5 4-motion 3.0 30V, but if so, a VW dealership should also be perfectly able to do the same service, since they'd be sharing the same parts, and putting them on an engine which would be identical, assuming that to be the case. (i.e. not like they'd be learning about the engine as they went, which might likely be the case if you took it to the local former Saturn/Pontiac place!)

I do still use my dealer for service on my Audi (at 49k miles), and I've maintained a friendly relationship with my service writer, and also a second service writer, who I've known for about 10 years (he was a service writer at my local VW dealership before switching  brands). -I know that if I went in to mine and said that I'd go there if they'd do it at 10% off and ring it up as a price match, that's what would happen, always assuming I'm not ALREADY beating them up on price for some other reason, or using a 15%-off coupon or something crazy! Wink

Thanks Keith,

As i expected, really good timely advice!

Yes it is an age thing...i don't drive it a lot.
The mileage is relatively low for a 2004.

My thoughts exactly about 'while you're in there'.
I have a pretty decent relationship with my dealer
service folks too.  There are a couple other
items i need to have them look at as well.

So i'm going to have to bite the bullet on this one.
Way cheaper than if the belt slips/jumps on the HWY,
i see this as required maintenance.

I'll have to put off the new Studio Monitors for a bit.

Thanks again.

Best,
Paul

Yes, the last two belt changes on my Porsche have been after 8,000 miles each time... but three years on each occasion. -For the Gates and Continental belts, any longer than that and you frequently end up needing a complete new engine. (the cylinders are nikasil-coated aluminium alloy, so any dropped valves mean bye-bye!)

...I've been VERY sorely tempted (and my will to resist tested to its limits) by a couple of 2.7 and 3.0 turbo engines for sale recently.

But my microphone lust is doing QUITE enough damage to my 'fun car fund' as it is, even without fettling a bigger mill!

One thing though... how much of a drive is it to Pennsylvania for you???

AWE tuning seem to be having a sale on all timing belt installs including the V6 3.0 30V...

I wish I had seen this thread earlier. I am at about 92,000 miles on my 2004 A4, and ready for the whole timing belt, water pump, tensioner, replacement. The dealer quoted $1400, a local Audi specialist $1200, which makes $595 look real attractive. I can't quite arrange for the 3.5hr 195mi trip each way right now.

Keith,

Damn! Just my luck...PA. is a bit of a haul for me,
but would have been worth it.

Anyway, i took it in yesterday and they have it almost completed.  I'm going over in a little while to pick it up.
Glad i did, they found a couple things that were near the edge.

Oh well, for future reference....Thanks.

Fingers crossed they got it all back together tidy.

btw, dealer wouldn't give me the R8 for a loaner...

One passed me in Glasgow on Thursday night. Whilst it would not be my choice at that price point it did look and sound fabulous.

It was somewhat overshadowed by the Monte Carlo classic rally launch 100m up the road though.

Keith,

Thanks again for letting me bounce some of this off you.
Got the car back with no leftover parts or leaks.
Seems ok so far.

Not sure if i just didn't notice before, but seems like
the engine has more valve noise...i forgot to ask
the dealer guy, but what is the recommended interval for
valve adjustments on the 3.0Litre, 30V?

...or are the 30v's normally a little clickety?

Thx,
Paul

oh, and if you pull the trigger on a R8, details please.

ROAD TRIP!!

Valves should be hydraulic and self-adjusting on those, I'd have thought... Triple check the oil level, and also ask about what weight would have been used, then the other questions would be about what sort of outside temperature you're presently seeing, and if the noise changes as the engine warms up.

Mine is a little clattery on startup (practically like a diesel!) but quickly calms down to a light ticking. only the cardinal sin of letting the oil level drop gives me any increase in tick.

New cam tensioners might be causing some running noise until they bed in and 'take the shape of the chain', I suppose... if that engine has cam chains to allow variable valve timing or whatever.

The R8 might be a while...  I have a savings fund set up, but I keep raiding it to buy microphones and stuff like that... If it happens, the Porsche will of course have to go.

Keith,

Checked the oil level before i drove it off their
lot...ok there.

It's been fairly cold up here, so maybe that?
Def. will let things settle in for a while.

I'll have to do some more studying on the valve train,
not sure exactly how that is actually set up?

haha...now back to regular gear lust...and good
luck on whatever purchases/trades you make.

Thx!
