The problem with SD2 files is that they employ a unique part of Apple's file system to store data that doesn't exist in other computer storage systems. Sending an SD2 file over the internet or copying it to any standard storage format hoses the data.

Apple stopped officially supporting the use of data other than file type and creator stored in the resource fork over a decade ago although thus far they still seem to support it.

His data fork appears to have been corrupted though, probably a hard drive issue.  Hopefully he had another backup elsewhere.
