Plextor DVD-R writing fail?
« on: January 20, 2011, 01:02:17 PM »

Howdy folks,

I have a problem writing DVD-ROM's with my Plextor PX-716A drive. After the first 0:32 seconds it gives me the error:

"Write Error; power calibration failed (code 037303)".

Searching Google gave me several threads about dirty lenses or bad media, but nothing very specific. I'm using TY DVD-R media.

The drive seems to work just fine for reading data off discs and it runs PlexTools just fine as well.

Any ideas?

It means the Laser is worn out.  Every time you record a disc it does a power calibration to find the optimum energy, and as the Laser diode ages eventually it's turned up all the way, but it's not enough.

I just borrowed a Maxell DVD-R disc from our sister-studio and it ran without problem. Now I'm really confused.

Do I have a bad batch of media?  Confused

I've had two Plextors stop working properly with DVD's.
One of them just was really picky, it wouldn't write to TDK discs but worked with Ritek's.
The other just stopped writing DVD's altogether.
Both continued to work fine for reading all media and writing CD's.    Like DC said, it's just on it's way out.

I am pleased I recently picked a couple up, you can still find them but you need to put a good few hours in searching. Good luck on locating one.
