Requests for MP3 hd?

Hi,

have you folks been requested to convert to MP3 HD files?

I have a weird situation here where a client will release a 42-song album which will not be a double or triple CD...Probably a CD with a folder containing 42 320 kbps files...

So I was considering converting to a higher ration than 320 kbps.

What are the solutions out there?
Any free software converters  already? Smile

I imagine Pro Tools HD MP3 converter is not doing it yet.

Thanks

Why not FLAC? http://flac.sourceforge.net/

It is supported by a good number of hardware devices now.
http://flac.sourceforge.net/links.html

HDTracks.com now sells a number of albums in 96/24 flac format.

16-bit files will be roughly 50-60% of the uncompressed size. I don't know if you could squeeze 42 tracks onto one cd. But you might get pretty close. Instead of 80 minutes of music you might expect about 133 to 160 minutes. That could be about 40x 4 minute tracks.

Flac is free. Has been in use for a good while and has been adopted as release distribution by some. It supports 24-bit encoding. A growing number of DAW's can import the files. Reaper can both read and write them. I think Samplitude can now also.

Wavelab 6 & 7 have GREAT MP3 encoders.

Flac would also be my choice but the files are larger.

We recently had to do a CD with over 40 MP3s on it to go along with a book for an author. I used the highest quality encoder on Wavelab and the client was well pleased.

Best of luck!!!  Smile

Haha - that's what I thought!  But checking out the Wiki seems it's a fairly recent development by Fraunhofer that contains both a lossless codec playable by an "mp3-HD" compatible player - along with a standard lossy mp3 embedded within the same file - so that a standard mp3 player could still play it.  So kind of the same as if you had a FLAC and an mp3 stuck together within a single file.

I'm not aware of what encoders and players are out there for this format though (and have never had anyone inquire as to whether I could deliver back in this format) - so if anyone can post some links would be appreciated.

Best regards,

It looks like there are some encoders and playback software here:

My choice iof MP3 convertor is LAME XP and it will create MP3 files with bit rate up to 496kbps.
