FM completely sounding like ass
« on: August 25, 2004, 09:24:42 PM »

No wonder all the kids are embracing I-Pod. I picked up a good set of consumer loudspeakers today to hook up to a system that has needed speakers for a while. This system has a decent turntable and cartridge (Denon/ Van den hul), a decent cassette deck (Nakamichi) good clean amplification (Sansui AU919) and decent cables. The tuner (TU717) was the cats meow in its day.

Damn the FM sounds like trash. Total compression on top compression on top of compression. When vocals come in, the track drops 10dB or more.

FM is dead. It should be abolished completely. Even the PBS station sounds like ass.

It is no longer the quality medium it used to be...why all the highs and compression?? Does not anyone have a decent set of monitors there anymore?

It is so bad.... it is a joke.

I don't listen to the radio because I don't enjoy radio music. I do sometimes listen to Internet radio, which is (obviously) a really low quality signal. But there's something weird I've noticed...

Low quality streaming music, especially RealAudio, sounds good in a way I can't explain. Occasionally I will bump into a band on a low-quality audio stream or get a low-quality sample of a band that I like. There is no doubt that the low-quality encodings sound like crap, but when I get the CD I am always surprised at how "bland" sounding it is. What once sounded like it was going to be great, sounds boring.

In all of these cases it's been metal since that's what I listen to the most. I think it may have something to do with the high-end being chopped off, the nasal-whining-fatiguing sound of the guitars disappearing, and the rhythm becoming more predominant. Am I crazy? Any other ideas?

Oh My.. It is really bad. The NPR station in my home town still sounds pretty good but in general,I find FM totally un-listenable. It's gotten worse over the years.

The radio station I used to work for a couple of years back didn't use a compressor and were probably the best sounding station in the area.  It made my job as the dj a lot harder though having to ride the board by adjusting levels all the time.
