"Money For Nothing" Banned in Canada?
« on: January 13, 2011, 11:03:58 PM »

This is one of the strangest ones in a while, and doesn't make me a happy Canadian...

Wow, that is sad.

I'm sure the "make sure no one is offended" commission sounded like a good idea at first.

Saw that the other day.

Surprised it hasn't happened here.

Unbelievable how PC countries are getting.

Interesting.

From the lyrics:
Quote:

See the little faggot with the earring and the makeup Yeah buddy that's his own hair That little faggot got his own jet airplane That little faggot he's a millionaire

Which are said by a man who's complaining that
Quote:

That ain't workin' that's the way you do it Get your money for nothin' get your chicks for free

Which shows the perspective of the song's creators as "some backwards and low-intellect people will say anything about people they hate or envy who've been more successful than them".

So the song in fact is showing how idiotic the guy who's calling another a 'faggot' is, and it is not slanderous towards homosexuals.

My own opinion, not politically-correct: anyone complaining about this song is gay.

So much irony, I can't eat all of it.

Then there's that little "let's make Huck " PC too.

Subtlety and satire are lost on some (most) people.

And in retaliation, Mark Knopfler scraps his album of Rita MacNeil covers.

Honestly, when I saw the post and before I read the linked article I was thinking: "could it be that some workers' union had protested against the song portraying hard-working low-wage people as prejudiced and resentful against those who had more success in life?"

Knopfler literally picked up the lyric when he was in an electrical goods store (the ones that sell both washing machines and TV's) when he overheard an employee whining about having to work so hard while the yoyo's on MTV got their money for nothing and their chicks for free. Knopfler says he quickly hid behind a washing machine to jot down as much of the conversation as he could.

This story very much reminds me of the spanking new sanitized version of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that has both the n-word and "injuns" edited out.

What frustrates me so about this is that life is being made more and more impossible by both right-wing and left-wing whiners who would probably have a ball together if locked up in a theme park devoted at once to that ideal glorious and innocent past and that ideal, glorious, happy future. It's clear that both left and right want exactly the same thing: a world that never was, and never will be.

I particularly enjoyed the following comment:
Quote:

As a straight white male I am offended by all the rap songs that contain the "N-Word". CBSC please ban all these songs forthwith...

The guy is right: if "faggot" bans a song, "nigger" should too.

Watch out what speech you take from me. It makes me speak it, and suddenly I start feeling it, and once you get me started.. well, that's your problem.
