The song, the player, the instrument in that order. If you have those three ingredients and can't get a good bass sound, then you can't get a good bass sound.

I have a freshly restored B15, a GK 800, a Good Bassman, an SWR 900, a Trace Elliot compressor, A Yamaha Bass preamp.....

Lately, A Lawson DI into a Dynamic just a touch of EQ to taste to tape is working on many genres.....

I have some Bass equipment for sale! just too much.

Left-field suggestion for those with 200-series racks.  The 205L seems to be under-buzzed, IMO.  Sounds big, has a great thin <-> fat control.

If you can find one, the SVT DI is very nice.

I don't know if anyone can find Bruce anymore [someone PM'ed me recently looking for him]... but the Eclair Engineering "Evil Twin" was the best [as in clearest / largest] sounding bass DI I had ever used.  My second favorite was the TAB-funkwerk V-71 - and when it worked it was great [really great] but reliability was never its strong suit.

Other than that - sometimes a Palmer unit on the output of an amp head is just what the Dr. ordered.  The DI section of the Great River MP-2NV [or ME-1NV] is great too... but you kinda need the bass player playing in the control room for that one.

As always... YMMV.

Peace.

Bruce is still around I bought two units off him last year.  I always tout these as the best because they are the best commercially available bass DI's.  The REDDI and Retrospec being a very very close second.

The Evil Twins are the best... except for my custom ones built off of Langevin 201A tube pre's... similar to the TAB units you're are talking about Fletcher. I should get one from Oliver to test when he ships my U73 compressors.

Bass guitar and tube DI's go hand in hand IMHO.

For orgasmic bass tones, try these together:

Bummer - they are awesome.  I don't know if you can find one second hand or not... but it would certainly be worth it to try!!!

The Retrospec "Juice Box" is a pretty cool tool, and a not too distant second in my world.

Peace.
