Yes, I've tried everything with/on the MKH60 and it's just not for me. But for what it's worth, it did make everything sound just like on TV. hehe

That's what it is supposed to sound like.  The 416 is the same way - not technically awesome sound by studio standards, but very familiar and reassuring sounding.

I just got the AT Schoeps CMC knockoffs delivered and am curious to see how they perform for indoor dialog.  I'm not expecting them to match the German mics, but the advice I've gotten says they are much better than their 1/3 the cost would suggest.

I was looking at a couple of the twins... With a clever mount and a pair of those, you can matrix a 2-axis B-format, and generate W, X and Y outputs. From that, you can feed it into something like David McGriffey's VVM program, and generate any combination of output patterns...

For example, you could get L, C, R, Ls and Rs outputs, and generate a sub feed from whatever sounds good...

Keith, have you made any recordings like this?

For in door/studio VO recording I've pretty much resorted to using only Rode K2's the last eight years or so. It just works, sounds great on every actor/source, and they're reliable and cheap. K2 and API 3124+ mic preamps and I can forget about gear and just get on with the real work.

Although I'm probably going to get a couple of DPA 4061 (low sensitivity) for ADR work in order to get the audio to fit better with MOCAP VO sessions (using DPA 4061 stuck on the helmet of the motion capture actor).

Not using the 800-twin, but I did build my own microphone/PSU/preamp/controller, with the matrixing also in the box, to do exactly that... I used larger diameter capsules, to allow for a 'choice' as opposed to the SoundFields which I also had. (I still have one...)

Took it up to Bruce Swedien's studio a little while ago, and we enjoyed playing around with it. -It works quite well on close-up sources, though it sounds "too far away" quite early on. -Not much 'reach', in fact, though for stereo backing vocals etc, it can be most impressive.

Mick Glossop had it for the last couple of months; he was using it on his current project.

Some pics from the build, if anyone's interested:

Tomas

The AT mics are for boom work - the K2 would be a bit much at the end of three feet of pole!

Keith

That is wild, man, just wild.

I get requests to record 'surround' audio for live events and haven't run across anything that looks usable for less than mega-bucks.

That's cool Keith!

Did you use a ribbon mic body for it?

Keith, let me add (speaking for all us burnt-fingered fumblers everywhere), MAN you do nice work!

I'd just like for my fingerprints to grow back someday....

Whose capsules did you use?

Good eye, Barks!

Yes, the ribbon mic body was plenty tall enough for the "tower-o-capsules", and the body allowed all 4 channels of circuitry to fit inside -just- if I stacked the circuit boards 'triple-deck' (4 decks if you count the connector).

I used the same 12-pin connector as the SoundField mics, so that I could use the same cables, since I have a 350ft run, a 100ft run and a couple of 25-foot and 12-foot cables.

the circuit boards were the first time I've ever built things on circular PCBs... the home-etched 'proof of concept' circuit boards shown in the pics were a bit of a mess, but I did make some "proper" versions made, for in case I ever make a second one.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v379/SSLtech/a01_Circuit_Boards.jpg

Thanks for the complement burp182, -I'm just a madman at heart!

I have a couple of K67 capsules which I'm either going to put into that mic, or just leave the current ones in there... right now it has the Peluso K67-types, which seem to work fairly well, though I might see if the genuine Neumann capsules work any better.

...Or maybe I'll just build up a whole second one, if I get another ribbon body. -I have the circuit boards; all I need to make is the capsule mount arrangement, grab another set oc components and connector, and go through the madness a second time... -We'll see.

Great build Keith.

WRT your 'reach' issue. Did you note Oliver's point about the effect that the rubber capsule mount curing could have on the microphones reach?
Somewhere in the WW New mic thread.

Man Keith, your handiwork is astounding!

Nice job - I'd be interested to know how the Neumann KK67 capsules sound in contrast to the Peluso's.

I see a bright future for your talent(s)...

I'm flattered... but also EXTREMELY fortunate, in many ways. -As well as living local to luminaries such as Bruce, there are lots of other very cool things nearby, and my colleagues at work seem to enjoy meeting the eventual fruits of my madness.

As another example; around the time that I made the microphone, I had been doing a lot of work with the Bach Festival Society choir. Shortly after finishing the mic, the choir was invited to sing Beethoven's 9th with the London Symphony Orchestra, who were playing a concert series at Daytona, at the Peabody Center.

-So I went along to a final rehearsal and made a side-by-side comparison recording with the SoundField mic and the 'Keef' mic directly atop one another, and recorded the B-format outputs of both to parallel track groups.

For that one, the Calrec Soundfield sounded much better.

But for up-close work, the 'Keef' version (being LDCs of course) generally sounds much stronger and 'bigger'.

That's what I'm describing as 'reach'... I looked at Oliver's post about the rubber and the capsule's 'reach', and I wonder if he's referring to its range of motion in response to shocks/bumps or tilting, whereas I'm using the term to refer to the mic's ability to "hear forwards", so to speak.

Quoting Oliver from the other thread:

"I pointed out before that the reach of the CS-1 is not just the capsule alone, it is also the dampening of this type of RTV (55 shore hardness) for particular frequencies. With enlarging or reducing the rubber area the "Reach" can be changed."

I read that to mean that the mounting of the capsule does affect its acoustic properties. How this occurs, I do not know.

Yes, I confess that I can't get my head around that, either.

Instead, I assumed that he MIGHT have been referring to a resonance which determines the capsule assembly's range of motion, which I think would be an important consideration for shipping/transit abuse.

-For my mic, I'm more paranoid about the (now doubled!) mass of the capsule arrangement, and the fact that its center of gravity is now further away from the curved plastic 'arc' saddle might cause the saddle to break, if a large bump or similar mechanical trauma were applied... -If I could get three METAL saddles, (one for the bottom, and two for the bit in between the two capsules) then I'd feel MUCH more comfortable.

On pics 1 & 4 there appears to be a difference in the base mount of the capsule assembly.
Is this correct? It looks to me like there is more rubber involved in pic 4.

I am trying to come up with an elegant idea for providing more secure fixing but without affecting the resonance or mass of the assembly.
Funnily enough it is not easy.

Is there any scope for a 'door stop' style safety on the grill itself? Just a little pair of rubber points that would only ever touch the top of the assembly if it did make an over excursion due to a knock or sudden shake.
