200,000 Recordings Donated To Library Of Congress
« on: January 10, 2011, 01:43:34 PM »

Found this of interest...

Quote:

The Library of Congress today announced the donation of over 200,000 recordings from the Universal Music Group. Besides being the largest single donation of audio the Library has ever received, the gift is notable for being made up of mainly metal master recordings of the audio, the highest standard where archival purposes are concerned.

"The Library's mission is to support the Congress in fulfilling its constitutional duties and to further the progress of knowledge and creativity for the benefit of the American people."

I started reading this and.... oh, never mind.  I'll shut up.  My thoughts belong on a different forum.

The cynic in me tells me that Universal didn't want to spend money on digitising all those recordings and/or paying for storage costs.

Ah well, in the end it means that many historical recordings will become public domain and easy to access. Great!

The text at the NPR website seems to have changed since I posted the original thread.

Kind of makes me wish I had copied all the text...

Except that Universal retains copyright control over these recordings, as is standard library/archival practice.
