wow

so many i had forgotten or never knew of. so many hugely talented people.

man, david gates and bread, everything i own, i think he wrote that for his dad? read that somewhere, made it even mroe meaningful to me after that

thanks for all the input and new outlets to check out

i am continuing to just listen

i had forgotten sunshine on my shoulders. sad song in a way

and is it just me, or do so many of these songs sound "timeless" many have little or no percussion etc, just raw but they stand the test of time.

had to add gordon lightfoot, wreck of the edmund fitgerald, amazing song

hmmm, maybe i better not dive into these waters!

i started to think how well some of these songs are done with the combo acoustic base, electric and keyboard additions, that still sound sparse, and seem to have this haunting quality about them. at least to me

was there anything special about this era in terms of how producers heard these songs or how the engineers recorded them? it seems these songs are mainly found in the 70's era?

i love the production on these, they still sound raw but they just have "parts" that are great

anyway, do you have any fav "haunting" songs? that really moves you?

thanks

tim

After reading the whole thread I see you mentioned the first song that came to my mind after reading your description.

Check out any of the Ray LeMontagne records. Amazing stuff. Go back and rediscover the early Cat Stevens stuff if you want to hear the ultimate in sparse, hifi, but complete sounding arrangements. Sad Lisa is very chilling.

Of course country music (the real stuff that hasn't been made in decade) has a lot of sparse haunting classics.  How can one forget Hank's 'Ramblin' Man' or Willie's version of 'Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain'?

Chilling, haunting, stunning; will never forget the first time I heard this:

Is That All There Is - Peggy Lee

And perhaps the most haunting recording of all time:

Johnny Cash - Hurt

Perhaps one of the very best covers of all time.

We might have a winner here. I can remember being absolutely stunned by the song and video of Hurt. I'm not sure which one was more jarring.

The darkest of old folk songs and tunes as performed by Martin Carthy have always got me.

If ever you get the chance, catch Martin Carthy.
Whenever I watch him I'm utterly seduced and transfixed by the music.

I always thought this was a haunting song about a broken heart.

Electric but haunting.

Also see Johnny Cash.
